Clarine Schutte

Clarine Henrietta (Olson) Schutte, 67, of Castalia, died May 13, 2000, at her summer home in Park Rapids, MN. Funeral services were held May 17 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Postville under the direction of Rev. Robert Hupp. Joan Martins was the organist, with special music by Lynette Wilson.
Clarine was born March 4, 1933, on the family farm in Marion Township, Clayton County, near Gunder. She was baptized and confirmed at the Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder and graduated from Postville High School in 1949. Following graduation, she was employed in the office at the Rural Electric Association in Postville. On Jan. 7, 1951, Clarine married Lloyd Schutte at the Marion Lutheran Church. To this union were born daughters Cindy and LuAnn, as well as a son, Michael. The couple spendt their entire life on the Schutte family farm near Castalia.
Clarine continued to work at the REA following her marriage, and was also employed in the office as a secretary at the Hygrade Packing Plant. She became employed as the elementary school secretary for several years and then worked in the office as a secretary at Iowa Turkey Products until her retirement.
Clarine liked to cook and make lefse and did extensive baking for the holidays. She was a gardener and seamstess, making suits for the men in the family and baptismal garments for the babies.
She is preceeded in death by her parents and three brothers, Hiram, Gerald and Milo Olson.
Surviving are her husband, Lloyd; her children, Cindy (Harold) Schmale, Sterling, CO, Michael (Rose) Schutte, Castalia, and LuAnn (Nicholas) Rolling of Waterville; eight grandchildren, John, Jason and Joseph Handke, Leisl and Gregory Schutte, and Amanda, Ruth and William Rolling; two brothers, Marion (Fern) Olson of Monona, and Don (Jan) Olson of Postville; a sister-in-law, Eleanor (Ivan) Torkelson, of Elgin; and a brother-in-law, Eugene (Lillian) Schutte, of Postville.
Casketbearers were Dirk Torkelson, Bruce Torkelson, Brad Schutte, Brian Schutte, Jim Olson, Larry Moore, Jeff Olson, David Olson and Greg Olson. The Schutte Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.
