Clifford Soride

Clifford E. Soride, 74, of rural Postville, died May 7, 2000, at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City, following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held May 10, 1 p.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Tuesday at Martin Funeral Home, Waukon.
Clifford Earl Soride was born Oct. 13, 1925, in Waukon, the son of Herman and Inez (Hanson) Soride. He was baptized at the Presbyterian Church and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon. He attended rural elementary schools and Waukon High School. Following school, he worked as a lineman for REC for a time and also traveled to the Dakotas to work the wheat harvest. He served in the U.S. Army from March 30, 1945, until Dec. 30, 1946, as a Tech 4, marine engine man, seeing duty in Japan, Korea and the Asiatic Pacific.
On August 25, 1945, he married Verna M. Rosendahl at St. John's Lutheran parsonage in Waukon. Following his return from the service, Clifford and Verna farmed in Allamakee County for many years. He was particularily fond of doing field work and watching the seasons cycle. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the VFW. Clifford enjoyed taking a variety of travels with Verna, playing cards and visiting with friends and relatives.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Verna; and a sister, Dolores Roe. Survivors include two sons, Dennis (Christine) Soride, Postville, and Duane (Sharon) Soride, St. Olaf; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Clara Winkie, of Waukon.
Casketbearers were Dean Winkie, Richard Holten, Steven Roe, Stuart Burmester, Rick Beardmore and Charles Rosendahl.
