DARLENE E. MEYER

Funeral services for Mrs. Richard (Darlene) Meyer were held Wednesday, July 26, 2000, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. The Rev. Robert Hupp officiated.
Marian Schutte was the organist and Kim Schutte was the soloist. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial followed funeral services in Postville Cemetery.
Darlene Elizabeth (Schroeder) Meyer, the daughter of Edward Christian Schroeder and Nora (Wilke) Schroeder, was born Jan. 16, 1927, on a farm near Postville. She passed away July 23, 2000, in the Good Samaritan Center in Postville. She had reached the age of 73 years, six months and seven days.
Darlene was baptized June 26, 1927, by the Reverend E.T. Finck and confirmed April 6, 1941, by the Rev. Frederick R. Ludwig, both in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. Darlene attended Luana School and graduated from Postville High School in 1945. Following graduation, she was employed as a cook and waitress at Thoma Cafe in Postville.
April 15, 1947, she was married to Richard Meyer in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. To this union, a daughter, Kathryn, was born.
Darlene worked as a cook at the Phillips 66 Station, the Koffee Shop, and most recently, the Postville Bakery. She was also employed at the Koevenig Variety Store. Darlene was an experienced cook and often planned the menus for the Alumni Banquet and other such events.
Darlene was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, with which she served as treasurer for many years. She was also active with the American Legion Auxiliary and Big Four Fair Board. She was involved in the local fire department auxiliary, Business and Professional Women's organization, Share Program, Historical Society, and John R. Matt Committee.
Darlene was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville and the Women of the ELCA, as well as the Alter Guild Committee, and served a term on the church council. She taught both Sunday School and Bible School for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Milton Schroeder; and one sister, Delores Mae Schroeder.
Surviving are her husband, Richard, of Postville; a daughter, Kathryn (Dale) Westendorf of Westgate; two granddaughters, Karla (Todd) Albers and Kristi Westendorf and her fiance, Bryan Shannon, all of Waverly; one great-granddaughter, Autumn Albers, also of Waverly; a brother, Merlin (Michele) Schroeder of Newark, CA; and a sister-in-law, Vila Schroeder of Farmersburg.
Casketbearers were Jason White, Brian Livingood, Randy Plaht, Mike Plaht, Larry Plaht and Terry Meyer.
