George A. Sweeney



George A Sweeney, 76, of Cedar Rapids died Friday, Jan. 19, 2007 at Mercy Medical Center following a brief illness. The funeral was held Tuesday, Jan. 23 at Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids with Father Nils Hernandez officiating. Burial in St. John's Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.

George was born March 12, 1930 in Waukon and had been a resident of Cedar Rapids since 1950. He married Norma Jean Mitchell October 28, 1950 at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, Lycurgus in rural Waukon.

He was employed as a welder at Iowa Steel and Iron Works, Inc. for 10 years and also worked as a truck driver for Hubbard Ice and Fuel Company for 45 years, retiring in 1995. George was a member of Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Church where he was formerly a member of the Parish Council. In addition, he belonged to the Cadets of St. George, Branch 45, F.C.S.L.A (formerly Catholic Workman). He enjoyed fishing and hunting, camping, doing yard work, and just being outdoors.

George is survived by his wife of 56 years, Norma Jean; three children, Wanda Baker (Everett) of Cedar Rapids, Denise

Blake (Ralph) of Phoenix, AZ, and Gary Sweeny (Lori) of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Betty Brummer (Florus) of Cedar Rapids, and Mary Nagel (Jim) of Waukon; three brothers, Connie (Helen) of Cedar Rapids, Thomas (Linda) of Prescott, AZ and Gene of Waukon; two sisters-in-law, Rose Mary Sweeney of Cedar Rapids, and Annie Sweeney of Savanna, IL; eight grandchildren, Eric Baker, Cheryl Mastin, Michael, Patrick and Kelly Blake, Ryan, Karlee and Kellen Sweeney; four great-grandchildren. Brenden and Kyleigh Baker, and Dalton and Colten Mastin.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh Sr. and Louise (Troendle) Sweeney; and two brothers, James and Hugh Sweeney. He was dearly loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed.
