INDIAN BOYS GOLF TEAM TURNS IN LOWEST ROUND OF SEASON FOR WIN OVER CALEDONIA, FALLS AT OELWEIN

A split of two dual meets this past week by the Waukon Indian boys golf team leaves the Tribe linksters with a 6-3-1 overall record on the year, including a 2-3 mark in the Northeast Iowa Conference. The Indians turned in their best team effort of the season in defeating Caledonia at home Tuesday, May 2 by a 152-159 result, but couldn't get by a young Oelwein squad Thursday, May 4 at Oelwein, falling by a 153-164 final. That Oelwein meet had been rescheduled from Monday, May 1 due to a scheduling conflict.
The Indians will now enter their final week of the "regular" season, wrapping up their conference dual meet schedule at New Hampton Monday, May 8 before hosting North Fayette Tuesday, May 9 to bring their dual meet season to a close. The Indians will then enter postseason tournament play Friday, May 12 with their Class 3A Sectional Tournament at Waverly-Shell Rock and their Northeast Iowa Conference Tournament at Charles City Monday, May 15. A finish in the top two at the sectional tournament will advance the Indians to district tournament play Friday, May 19 at Waterloo Columbus.

vs. Caledonia ...
With their lowest team total of the season, the Indian golf boys turned away Caledonia at home Tuesday, May 2 by a 152-159 final result. The Tribe had three of four scorers under 40 for the first time this season, helping lead the Indians over the team they had tied with at Caledonia, 170-170, earlier this year.
"We finally played the way we are capable of playing," Waukon boys golf coach Leon Mindham said. "Let's hope that this carries over into our last week before our sectional and conference tournaments."
The Indians were led by the double-medalist finishes of senior Mike Blocker and junior Heath Hesse, as both finished with equal totals of 36 - Blocker's lowest of the season. Caledonia's Nate Wurm was just a stroke off that pace with a 37 for runner-up medalist honors.
Indian junior Matt Johnson was right behind those medal winners, turning in a 38, with freshman Roger Martin's 42 completing the Indian team scoring. Junior Billy Van Gorp and senior Mike Wadsworth also turned in rounds for the Indian varsity, Van Gorp shooting a 45 and Wadsworth a 47.
In addition to Wurm's 37, Caledonia counted one round of 40 and two rounds of 41 to make up its varsity total of 159.
The Indian junior varsity fell to Caledonia by a 167-190 final result. Sophomore Chad Bakkum led the Indians with a 43 but did not get enough support to combat four Caledonia rounds from 39 to 44.
Sophomores Tom Howe and Mike Fossum scored rounds of 48 and 49 respectively, with freshman Brady Iverson's 50 completing the Indian junior varsity total. Rounds of 52 were also turned in by senior Brian Swenson and sophomore Kevin Martin, with freshmen Zach Bulman, 55, and Thayer Jacobs, 64, also completing rounds for the Indian junior varsity.

at Oelwein ...
A young, talented Oelwein squad was less than hospitable to the Indian golf boys, handing them a 153-164 loss at Oelwein Thursday, May 4. The meet was previously scheduled for Monday, May 1, but had to be moved to Thursday after a conflict was found with other school-related events. Oelwein's varsity team total in the meet was made up of scores from two sophomores and two freshmen.
"They have a lot of good young kids," Waukon boys golf coach Leon Mindham said. "We didn't shoot too badly, it was just a tough course, fairly long. Our kids weren't used to the greens on that course, they were "rolly" and fast."
For the second consecutive meet, Indian senior Mike Blocker shared medalist honors with a round of 36, this time equaling the score of Oelwein freshman Eric Sanders. Fellow Husky freshman Chris Aldrich claimed runner-up medalist honors with a round of 38.
In addition to Blocker's 36, the Indians got a round of 40 from junior Heath Hesse and two rounds of 44 from juniors Billy Van Gorp and Nate Novak to complete their varsity team total. Junior Matt Johnson and freshman Roger Martin also completed rounds for the Indian varsity, Johnson shooting a 45 and Martin a 51.
In addition to their medal-winning freshman totals of 36 and 38, Oelwein also counted rounds of 39 and 40 from a pair of sophomore golfers, with one other sophomore and a senior making up the rest of their varsity golf squad.
The Indian junior varsity fell to Oelwein by a 170-214 final result, finding it difficult to compete with four Oelwein rounds under 45. The junior varsity Indians were led by senior Mike Wadsworth and his round of 45.
Sophomore Mike Fossum and freshman Zach Bulman each turned in rounds of 56 to aid the Indian JV cause, with sophomore David Miller bringing that cause to completion with a round of 57. Sophomores Kevin Martin and Tom Howe also golfed for the Indian junior varsity, finishing with respective rounds of 60 and 69.
