INDIAN TRACK BOYS IMPROVE SOME PERFORMANCES AND STATE MEET STANDINGS AT LAST CHANCE MEET

A number of members of the Waukon Indian boys track team competed in the Cedar Rapids Last Chance qualification meet held at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids Tuesday, May 16. The mission of those Indian competitors, and those competing from the other 42 teams represented at the meet, was simple - put forth their best performance of the season in an attempt to get qualified for the upcoming state track meet. May 16 was the final day for establishing a state-qualifying performance for high school boys in Classes 2A, 3A and 4A.
"There were 42 schools at this meet, and I would say about 3/4 of them were big schools from Class 4A, like the Iowa City and Cedar Rapids schools," Waukon boys track coach Harlan Heidelbauer said. "The competition was really great down there, but our kids ran very well and accomplished what we set out to do. We went down there to get some events qualified for the state meet, and we were able to get that done. And not only did we get those events qualified, but we were able to get ourselves in some pretty good heats for the state meet."
What Coach Heidelbauer termed as "the highlight of the meet" came in the 400 meter hurdles, where senior Josh Tweedy finished second in a school record time of 55.46 seconds. That clocking eclipsed the old 400 meter hurdle mark for Waukon boys track of 56.20 seconds set by 1997 WSH graduate Mike Cunningham in his senior season for the Indians. Tweedy's time also boosted him up among the top performances in Class 3A in the event.
The Indians also got another second-place finish at the meet from senior Eddie Frick in the 1600 meter run. Frick clocked in with a time of 4:35.53 for runner-up honors in the event.
