Indians pass test at Waterloo West

Waukon's top-rated girls basketball squad faced one of its toughest challenges of the season Monday night at Waterloo West. The Indians managed a 60-52 win. The week before, the Tribe had posted sizeable wins over Crestwood and Postville.
For the season, the Tribe is 19-0, including a 10-0 standing in the Northeast Iowa Conference.

vs. Crestwood...
Tuesday, Feb. 1, the Indians defeated Crestwood in a one-sided NEIC contest. Waukon posted a sizeable 70-21 home victory.
Waukon took command from the first whistle, holding their guests scoreless through the game's first five and a half minutes. In fact, the Cadets landed only a pair of baskets in the first half - two triples - to find themselves in a 31-6 hole at the half.
Although Crestwood picked up the pace offensively in the third and fourth periods, the Indians rolled behind a 27-point third quarter to claim the victory.
Coach Gene Klinge had little to say about his team's win. "Cresco is obviously having a rebuilding problem and I think much of that stems from the fact that they're having a difficult time scoring. We played solid defense, but they missed easy shots, too." The Cadets are currently winless in the NEIC and have only one win overall.
Waukon had shooting difficulties of its own. The Indians landed just three of 20 long-range baskets. "I was disappointed in our outside shooting. It was the poorest we've done all year," the coach mentioned.
Waukon's dominance on the court allowed most of the roster to see plenty of time in the contest. All but two Indians posted points.
Senior guard Sam Reiser paced the Tribe with 30 points and 11 steals.
Senior forward Emily Garrett posted an excellent showing on the boards, reeling in 14 rebounds. She also contributed nine points and seven assists. "Emily didn't really shoot well, but she still had a solid game and pretty much dominated on the boards," Klinge noted.
Senior guard Carlyn Wacker added seven points and seven assists and also picked up five steals.
Senior forward Jordan Curtin pulled down five rebounds and junior forward Tiffany O'Neill blocked a Crestwood shot.

Junior varsity...
Waukon's junior varsity team suffered its third loss of the year to the Cadets, falling by a 37-32 count.
Crestwood jumped to an early 11-7 lead and maintained an 18-15 advantage at the half.
By the end of the third, Waukon had pulled within one point, 27-26, but the Cadets outscored their hosts 10-6 through the final frame.
"The free throw line really hurt us tonight," commented JV coach Dave Schoeberlein. The Tribe landed only one of seven attempts. Crestwood, on the other hand, was 14-for-19 from the charity stripe.
The coach also pointed out that "You must always be ready for your opponent."
Leanna Hammel was the high scorer with 12 points. She paced the defense with nine steals.
Hannah Jones chipped in six points and Alex Langland contributed five.
Karisa Sickels yanked down eight rebounds and Hammel had seven.
Langland passed out four assists and Lynsey Mellick picked up four steals.

at Postville...
The Indians continued their dominant ways Saturday, Feb. 5, with a 79-30 nonconference victory over Postville.
Waukon established the tempo early, grabbing an exceptional 25-2 lead in the first frame behind 19 points from Reiser.
At the half, the Tribe was up 44-10 and easily cruised to their 18th win of the season.
Part of the Indians' success came from a good night of shooting. The Tribe landed 54 percent from the floor while holding the Pirates to just 19 percent. "We had a lot of good shots," noted Klinge.
The Indians were also helped by the absence of all-stater Brittany Heins. Heins, a 6'3" junior, is out of the Pirates' lineup after sustaining a knee injury a week earlier.
Despite having their top player off the roster, Postville nearly matched the Indians on the glass. Waukon reeled in 27 boards and Postville grabbed 22. "I was a little disappointed in our rebounding. We didn't do a good job blocking out. That shouldn't be happening," the coach added.
Reiser racked up more points than the entire Postville squad combined, finishing the night with 33 after landing 14 of 21 shots, including five of nine beyond the arc.
After sitting out the past two contests, senior post Stephanie Snitker returned to the Indian lineup, adding nine points and four rebounds in the win.
Klinge also pointed out the efforts of his bench, which saw ample playing time Saturday. "It was nice to get some scoring from our bench. Our reserves got to play quite a bit," the coach noted.
Junior forward Ruth Rolling came from the bench to post four points and block a Pirate shot. Junior post Ramsey Welch contributed six points and four rebounds. Senior forward Stephanie Weighner chipped in five points, too.
O'Neill and Garrett also collected four rebounds.
Wacker dished out seven assists and Garrett added five.
Defensively, sophomore guard Alex Langland, Wacker, Reiser, and Garrett each had six steals.

Junior varsity...
In the night's junior varsity contest, the Indians stormed to a 50-22 victory.
The Tribe blazed to a 14-0 lead after one quarter and held a 32-8 advantage at the half. Waukon outscored their hosts 18-14 in the second half to score the win.
Schoeberlein was pleased with the way his team opened the night. "Once again our pressure decided the game early. In this game we did not allow them to get a breath and maintained the lead we got in the first quarter."
The win was quite one-sided, however the Indian coach still saw areas his charges can improve upon. "We did have a number of fouls that could have hurt us in a close game. We must learn from out mistakes to make us a better team in the last week of the season."
Sickels' 12 points paced Waukon and Mellick added 11.
Hammel ripped down six rebounds and Larkin grabbed five.
Defensively, Langland, Farley, Meyer, and Mellick all ended the night with four steals.
Christie Dundee blocked a Pirate shot and Sarah Riese dished out a pair of assists.

at Waterloo West...
Monday, Feb. 7, the Tribe faced one of its stiffest tests of the year when they traveled to Waterloo West. The Indians still managed to come away with a 60-52 win.
The Wahawks trailed by a single point after one quarter and seized a narrow, 28-26 lead by the half.
In the third, the Indians outscored their hosts 19-10 to build a critical lead. Waukon hung on in the fourth, landing crucial free throws to capture the victory.
"This was an extremely good game for us," said Klinge. "We had to fight through adversity. It was very gratifying since it was a hard-earned win."
Fouls were a huge part of the game. The Indians were able to clinch the win on the free throw line, converting 24 of 35 attempts to surpass the school record of 23 free throws in a single game set in the 1996-97 season.
In fact, the Wahawks outscore the Tribe from the field, thanks in part to six baskets from beyond the arc. "West shot very well from three-point range," the Indian coach pointed out.
Waukon benefitted from fouls, but also suffered a bit as Wacker found herself in foul trouble early in the game. "There was a stretch where we couldn't get things done offensively and part of that was the fact that we had Carlyn out because of foul trouble," Klinge said.
Waukon had to lay off defensively in the second half as fouls weighed heavy on the Indians' minds. "We couldn't pressure as much as we'd like to, mostly due to our fouls," the coach stated.
Wacker's foul difficulties allowed junior guard Molly Rixen to step into the contest. "Molly did a very credible job and played great defense while she was in the game," Klinge remarked.
The Tribe started shakily in a few statistical categories, turning the ball over 11 times in the first half. Waukon also landed only seven of 15 free throws, although the Indians were able to remedy both concerns in the third and fourth.
The Indians used a balanced offense with Reiser scoring 17 points, Snitker adding 16, and Garrett finishing with 15. Thirteen of Reiser's points were notched at the charity stripe and nine of Garrett's tallies were added from free shots.
Garrett completed a double-double with ten rebounds and Snitker grabbed nine. O'Neill reeled in six boards.
Wacker paced the Indians with four assists and four steals.
Reiser claimed a trio of steals and Snitker denied a Wahawk shot.
Klinge also pointed out the large Indian crowd that made the lengthy trip. "We were very grateful to the Waukon fans that made the long trip on a Monday night," he said, adding that the big school atmosphere was quite different than what his team is used to. "It was kind of fun to win in front of such a hostile crowd."

Junior varsity...
In junior varsity competition, the Indians suffered a 59-55 loss to the Wahawks.
By the end of the third, the Indians trailed 42-31. Waukon made a fourth quarter run, outscoring Waterloo West 24-17 in the final eight minutes, but the Wahawks held on for the win.
Schoeberlein said, "We got off to a slow start. We had some really good shots but could not make them fall. Our defense was good at times and also not so good at others, we ended up giving up too many transition lay-ins. We had a really good run at the end of the game to make it close. We need to be more assertive in the first half of our games to put us in a situation to be successful at the end of the game."
Leanna Hammel led the offense with 13 points and Langland chipped in nine.
Sickels ripped down seven rebounds and Langland and Farley grabbed five each.
