Iowa Womens Foundation gives grant to KPVL

The Iowa Women's Foundation has given a $9,000 grant to KPVL, Postville's community radio station. The grant is the largest in the history of the Women's Foundation.
The money will be used to develop "KPVL's Voices of Women," 20 half-hour programs addressing the issues of immigrant populations relevant to women's health, domestic violence, racism and women's rights.
KPVL officials have scheduled two volunteer meetings on Monday, February 28 and Thursday, March 3 to find people willing to work on the "Voices of Women" program and other KPVL programs. The February 28 meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Postville Community Center, while the Thursday, March 3 meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the KPVL studios.
"We're a community radio station, which means we rely on volunteers from the community to develop and produce our programs," said KPVL Marketing Director Paul Scott. The "Voices of Women" program will be produced by KPVL's Jodi Gaunt, with help from volunteers Nikki Brevig, Carolyn Corbin, and Leah Lederman, among others.
KPVL has had discussions with the Iowa Women's Foundation about syndicating the "Voices of Women" programs to other radio stations in Iowa. In announcing the grant to KPVL, Iowa Women's Foundation officials noted the ability to reach women living in rural areas of Northeast Iowa as well as the ability to reach diverse populations including Hispanic and Eastern European immigrant women.
KPVL General Manager Rob Dehli and KPVL board members will lead the two volunteer meetings. They will review the programs at the radio station and offer ways that volunteers can help with the programs.
