JV grapplers close out year at Riceville, New Hampton tourneys

Waukon's junior varsity wrestlers completed the 2004-05 season this past week with a pair of tournaments.

Riceville Tourney...
Tuesday, Feb. 1, the Indians headed to Riceville for tournament action. Waukon ended the day with a trio of championship finishes and four runners-up.
Format for the event varied slightly from most tournaments. Wrestlers were divided into four-man brackets and didn't compete in the typical weight classes.
Matt McMillan, David Burrett, and Tony Drew were champions in their divisions while Luke Jones, Jimmy Larson, Nick Troendle, and Zach Howe earned second place standings.
Results from Riceville are as follows:
Nick Howe lost by fall to Josh Scheer (Osage), lost a 7-4 decision to Aaron Aamudt (Lake Mills), and lost a 4-0 decision to BJ Praska (Crestwood) to finish fourth.
Derek Drew lost by fall to Casey Bauer (Cre), lost a 9-1 decision to Brad Henry (Decorah), and lost a 2-1 decision to David Branstad (Forest City) to finish fourth.
Matt McMillan won an 8-4 decision over Acea Spiegler (Postville), won a 2-0 decision over Bryan Baldwin (Nashua-Plainfield), and won a 5-0 decision over Mat Feltus (North Butler) to finish first in his bracket.
Mike Allison pinned Nick Kraling (Dec), lost a 6-0 decision to Kenny Olson (FC), and lost by fall to Curtis Wefel (N-P) to finish third.
Luke Jones pinned Tony Niese (O), lost a 7-0 decision to Brett Wilson (FC), and won a 10-6 decision over Robert Beatty (N-P) to finish second.
Danny Heffern lost by fall to Cody Tobin (N-P), lost a 10-0 major decision to Derek Johnson (Cre), and lost a 4-0 decision to Zach Hase (O) to finish fourth.
Frank Weymiller won a 7-2 decision over Joe Porcelli (Nora Springs-Rock Falls), lost an 11-5 bout to Mike Fuller (New Hampton), and lost by fall to Keith Schwartzhoff (Dec) to finish third.
Nick Brink lost a 2-0 decision to Andy Halloran (FC), won a 5-4 decision over Jacob Thomas (Cre), and lost a 12-4 major decision to TJ Askelson (Dec) to finish third.
Jimmy Larson lost by fall to Cory Jacobs (O) and pinned Kyle Holschlage (NH) to finish second.
Joe Hilleshiem pinned James Gillen (Riceville), lost a 3-0 decision to Jon Pickar (NH), and lost a 5-2 decision to Ryan O'Connell (Cre) to finish third.
Matt Tobin lost by fall to Blake Marshall (NB), won a 7-6 decision over Willie Long (Charles City), and lost a 4-2 overtime decision to Paul Sobolik (Cre) to finish third.
Nick Troendle won a 6-0 decision over Adam Angell (O) and lost by default to Jake Belay (Dec) to finish second.
David Burrett pinned Chris Zidlicky (Dec), won a 10-0 major decision over Eric Hagen (LM), and won by fall over Ben Martin (N-P) to finish first.
Josh Brink lost by fall to Zach Flick (NH), Cody Alstat (Dec), and Adam Haacke (R) to finish fourth.
Zach Howe lost by fall to Dustin Brummond (N-P), won a 6-0 decision over Cody Samec (NC-NK), and won an 8-6 overtime bout with Lucas Kuene (Dec) to finish second.
Tony Drew won a 5-0 decision over Phillip Smith (Cre), won by forfeit over Jake Brackey (LM), and won a 12-6 decision over Beau Martin (N-P) to finish first.

New Hampton Tourney...
The final event on the JV calendar this season was tournament action at New Hampton. David Burrett claimed the Indians' lone championship at 189 while Tony Drew also advanced to the finals round, taking second at 215.
Coach Greg Adams commented on the strength of the field at the New Hampton tournament. "This is a very competitive tournament for our guys. It's like the JV's postseason. It gives wrestlers a chance to gauge where they're at. Guys that place first, or even advance to the finals, are basically varsity-caliber wrestlers."

112 - Nick Howe lost a 3-2 decision to Weidebacher (Cedar Falls) and finished fifth.
119 - Derek Drew lost by fall to Johnston (Nashua-Plainfield) and Graves (CF) to finish out of the placewinnings.
125 - Matt McMillan lost by fall to Mahlstadt (New Hampton) and Mitchell (N-P) to finish out of the placewinnings.
130 - Mike Allison lost by fall to Baldwin (N-P) and lost a 10-6 decision to Baltes (NH) to finish sixth.
135 - Frank Weymiller lost a 10-2 major decision to Johanns (Osage) and then pinned Niess (O) to finish fifth.
140 - Danny Heffern lost by fall to Fiser (Charles City) and lost a 10-2 major decision to Hase (O) to finish sixth.
145 - Jimmy Larson lost a 10-0 major decision to White (N-P) and lost by fall to Kuhlman (Denver-Tripoli) to finish out of the placewinnings.
160 - Joe Hilleshiem lost a 2-0 decision to Pickar (NH) and lost by fall to Tindall (CF) to finish out of the placewinnings.
189 - David Burrett pinned Routt (Oelwein), pinned Youngblut (CF), and won a 13-2 major decision over Gisleson (O) to finish first.
215 - Tony Drew won a 5-0 decision over Nolan (Oel), pinned Smith (CF), and lost by major decision to Brummond (N-P) to finish second.
275 - Zach Howe lost by fall to Martin (N-P) and pinned Hackman (NH) to finish third.
