Kathy Howes one of NICC pair honored by Phi Theta Kappa

Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), an organization devoted to student academic excellence in junior colleges, recently honored a Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) administrator and human services instructor.

Kathy Howes of Dorchester, a human services instructor at the Calmar Campus, was named a 2005 Faculty Scholar and 2005 Parnell Scholar. Howes will serve as the organization’s 2005 Faculty Scholar. She will attend PTK’s Faculty Scholar Conference and the International Honors Institute.

Howes also received a 2005 Parnell Scholarship, which provides funding to cover her registration for the 2005 International Convention. Phi Theta Kappa awards a Parnell Scholarship to a Faculty Scholar who has never attended a PTK convention. Howes has taught human services courses at NICC since 1990.

Robert Maxson, NICC vice president for administrative services and Calmar Campus provost, received the Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction.

Maxson will attend PTK’s annual international conference in Dallas, TX in April to receive his honor. The Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction honors college presidents and campus provosts who demonstrate strong commitment and participation in PTK, have encouraged participation on regional and international levels, and provided direction for chapter projects that benefited the college and community. Maxson, a resident of Decorah, has worked at NICC since 1991.
