Lansing City Council holds regular meeting with full agenda

The Lansing City Council met in regular session Monday, March 7 with a full room a citizens who had their chance to voice opinions later in the meeting.



The first order of business was approving the clerk and treasurer reports, which were approved before the council moved on to the public hearing the the Fiscal Year 2006 budget.

OLD STONE SCHOOL

The council reviewed the current condition of the Old Stone School and how much the outer wall has moved in the past year. The movement of the outside base brick. Placing a safety fence around the building was recommended, although at this time the council has decided to hold off any immediate action. An architect from Cedar Rapids had recommended to take the base brick off from the middle door down and inspect the inner wall to see what the city is dealing with.

WATER/SEWER REPORT

John Rethwisch, the Water/Sewer Superintendent, reported a water main break near the treatment plant occurred Monday morning. As the crew repaired the water main, they uncovered approximately 20 lineal feet of the water line that was laid approximate 35 years ago. Rethwisch voiced his concern about the wear of this line was beyond the 35 years of age and suggested to the council this will be a concern as they prepare for the new treatment plant project.

BOAT RELOCATION

The main discussion of the evening involved the proposed relocation of two boats in the marina. A petition had been recently been received by the council requesting the relocation of two boats concerning Docks #1 and the Diagonal Dock. Ray Rich had received a letter indicating his boat be moved from the Diagonal Dock to Dock #1 to make room for Jack Libbey's commercial boat. It was made known that Libbey had requested a larger slip in the marina through the city on January 25 in anticipation of purchasing a larger boat. Rich and his supporters cited many different solutions apart from moving his boat, convincing the council to leave the situation as is.

The city council set Spring Cleanup in Lansing for Tuesday, April 19th and Open Burning for yard waste only, will be March 28 through May 31.
