Leo Brandt

Leo E. Brandt, of Paradise, Texas, and formerly of Waukon, died Monday, January 24, 2005, at the North Dallas VA Hospital in Lancaster, Texas, after a long battle with cancer. Funeral services were held Thursday, January 27, at the Hawkins Funeral Chapel, Bridgeport, Texas, with Rev. Craig Erb officiating. Interment was at DFW National Cemetery.
Leo was born January 19, 1947, in Waukon, Iowa, the son of Ralph and Mary Urell Brandt. He graduated from Waukon Senior High in 1965. In 1966, he joined the US Army and served in Vietnam.
After leaving the army, he married Dorothy Fleming in Fitchburg, Mass. They were the parents of four children: Denise, Michelle, Dennis, and Michael. They later divorced.
Leo worked at Universal Engineers in Cedar Rapids until he married Becky M.C. Water in Irving, Texas. He worked at Cargill Manufacturing until his health failed.
Survivors include his wife, Becky Brandt; his mother, Mary Brandt of Waukon; a sister, Dorothy (Rick) Powell of Atkins, Iowa; his children, Denise (Justin) McGrath of New Salem, Mass., Michelle (Matthew) Harty of Hubbertson, Mass., Dennis (Penny) Brandt of Ashbach, Germany, and Michael (Melissa) Brandt of Limerick, Maine; two stepsons, Matthew (Katie) VanderLyke of Maxville, Fla., and Jon VanderLyke of Paradise; nine grandchildren, Sean and Joshua McGrath, Rayna and Mitchell Harty, Adelaide, Elizabeth, and Zachary Brandt, and Leonard and Kalee VanderLyke; uncles John Urell and Tony (Kate) Urell; and aunts Sarah (Donald) Drew of Cedar Rapids and Judy (Howard) Sorum of Atkins.
He was preceded in death by his farther, Ralph; his grandparents, Ed and Lenora Brandt and Thomas and Ethel Urell; and two uncles, Lloyd and Willis Brandt.
Casketbearers were Howard Sorum, Rick Powell, Steve Paulsen, Greg Werry, Charles Pike, Lewis Turner, and Michael Turner.
