LOCAL AG INSTRUCTOR ATTENDS STATE CONFERENCE

Nate Gebel, of the Allamakee Community School District, attended the Iowa Agricultural Education Conference in Ames, June19-22. Agricultural educators from high school and post-secondary schools converged on Ames for four days of professional development. The conference theme was "Preparing For the New Millennium."
To assist in meeting mission and goals, the conference was designed to enhance teacher in-service opportunities by involving Iowa State University and agribusinesses in Ames and Story County.
Starting Monday, June 19, agricultural educators kicked off the conference with the first general session featuring Patrick Grady, a professional speaker, who inspired and encouraged individuals to do their best in all they attempt. Grady is dedicated to helping others to improve themselves through the use of each person's individual talents, skills, abilities and mental attitude.
Agricultural educators then participated in an afternoon in-service training session at Iowa State University. Inservice topics included embryo transplants, successful selling, interactive Web CT/Internet, grant writing, and environmental workshops. Teachers were provided with cutting-edge technology and new teaching materials.
Conference attendees participated in intense workshops to learn how to use the new technology with their students. Members from the Department of Education presented information on new initiatives, new standards and state expectations for agricultural education.
Awards to professional organization members were presented, including Outstanding Ag. Ed. Program, Outstanding Ag. Ed. Instructor, Outstanding Young Member, and many others.
During general sessions of the Iowa Association of Agricultural Educators (IAAE), organization business was conducted, new board members and officers were installed and outgoing directors were honored.
Throughout the 2000 Iowa Ag. Ed. Conference, agricultural educators developed themselves professionally, gained valuable in-service training, and networked with other Ag. Educators throughout the state. All aspects of this conference benefit agricultural education students throughout the state of Iowa.
