Martha Heins

Funeral services for Martha Heins were held Monday, January 31, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. in St. John Lutheran Church at Luana, Iowa. The Reverend Christopher Staley officiated. Casket Bearers were: Grandsons, Lynn Heins, Darryl Holien, David Holien, Daren Holien, Denis Holien, Craig Heins, Daniel Holien, and Leigh Taylor. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.
Martha Carolina Wilhelmina (Sander) Heins was born October 4, 1907, to George and Augusta (Kamps) Sander on a farm in Allamakee County, east of Postville, Iowa. She passed away Friday, January 28, 2005, in the Good Samaritan Center in Postville, Iowa. She had reached the age of 97 years, 3 months, and 24 days.
Martha was baptized November 3, 1907 in St. John Lutheran Church at Luana by the Reverend William Paulson. She attended the Cherry Valley Country School.
On October 22, 1930 Martha was married to Harlen Charles Dietrich Heins in the St. John Lutheran Church at Luana. To this union three children were born. They farmed in Grand Meadow Township in Clayton County, also Cherry Valley in Allamakee County and then moved to Luana in 1964. In 1994 they moved to an apartment in Postville. Martha became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Postville in March of 1998.
Martha enjoyed growing flowers. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Luana, the Women of the ELCA and helped with making quilts for their mission projects. Martha also enjoyed playing cards.
She is survived by her three children, Hilery (Joyce) Heins, Postville, Arletta (Willard) Holien, Ossian, IA, and Fred (Rose Marie) Heins, Cedar Falls, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, Deb Heins, Lynn (Rosaleta) Heins, David (Vicky) Holien, Denis (Marge) Holien, Kathy (Dick) Munoz, Kris (David) Berton, Daniel (Sheryl) Holien, Darryl (Pam) Holien, Daren (Kristi) Holien, Craig (Sonja) Heins, and Leigh (Betsy) Taylor; 20 great grandchildren, Nathan Heins, Sara Heins, Kendra Jonkoniec, Chelise Holien, Shay Holien, Chase Holien, Caitlin Holien, Adam Berton, Alisa Berton, Lindsey Holien, Abbie Holien, Jared Holien, Mathew Holien, Nickolas Holien, Karianna Heins, Isabella Heins, Benjamin Heins,Olivia Taylor, Harrison Taylor, Noah Taylor; one great great grandson, Jayson Jonkoniec.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Harlen, who died March 30, 1995, and two sisters, Mabel and husband, Harry Gordon, and Dorthea and husband, Elliott Neuhring.
