Participate, communicate, evaluate at Kee Cultural Fair set for March 17

Monday, March 17, The Kee High School Music, Spanish and Art departments will present their first annual Cultural Fair for the general public to take part in. The free Open House will be held from 5:30-6:45 p.m. in the Kee High School cafeteria, halls and gymnasium.
Since the goal of the event is to provide students an opportunity to apply their knowledge, communicate effectively and learn from feedback, the Main Street Lansing organization, local employers, parents and citizens are invited to help out by evaluating the students' presentations. Guests will enjoy multicultural instrumental and vocal music performances, power point presentations, ancient pottery art, cave drawings, explanations, various food samples and a piñata. The band will perform Spanish instrumentals at 5:30 p.m. and the Vocal group will present Irish tunes at 6:30.
Thanks to the efforts of Vocal Music Director Jolie Wiley, Instrumental Music Director Justin Schwake, Art Instructor Daun Greif and Spanish teacher Kris Ward, approximately half of Kee High School's student body will participate in a "real world" program, complete with high expectations and performance evaluations. Their ultimate goal is to translate knowledge into a usable and visible form. Ward said the program is designed to implement Iowa's Core Curriculum, which focuses on 21st Century employability standards with an emphasis on communication skills.
Schools understand that just learning facts is no longer enough. According to the Iowa Department of Education website: “…academic and cognitive skills, as essential as they are, are not all that is necessary for a successful life. In our global technological age, young people also need to work with and learn from diverse groups, be flexible in a variety of work and social settings, and be adaptable to changing times. They need to demonstrate leadership and take responsibility for results, show initiative and resourcefulness, and be productive and accountable for their actions.”
