Postville ousted by Elkader in double overtime thriller

POSTVILLE OUSTED BY ELKADER CENTRAL IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

ELKADER - This was expected be one of the premier district playoff contests in the area and it lived up to its billing.

Central held the hot hand as it hit six 3-pointers throughout the contest Monday to unseat Postville, 52-51, at Central Elkader High School.

“We had a good season. I couldn't be prouder of these kids,” Postville coach Mike Sass said. “They (Central) hit the big shots when necessary, and we had some untimely turnovers. But our guys never gave up.”

Postville ends its season with a 6-15 record. Central (10-12) advanced to the District 6 quarterfinal game last Wednesday and beat Edgewood-Colesburg 70-60 to move on to the District Semifinal game played against Valley this past Monday.

The first period was a low-scoring affair which featured defense on both ends of the floor for the first eight minutes. The Warriors led 5-4 at period's end.

Central’s Daniel Bauder began to find the basket in the second quarter picked up the pace as both teams found their ways to score. Neither team could get a good run on the other as Postville stayed within four, 19-15, at the half.

The Pirates, who have enjoyed strong third quarters all season, had another good third quarter effort led 27-26 as the third quarter came to an end.

The Warriors outscored the Pirates 19-18 in the final period to force an extra period of overtime. Regulation play ended in a 45-45 deadlock.

The final quarter was decided by one point as the Warriors once again eked out a 7-6 point overtime performance to win the game by one point 52-51.



Postville hit 15 of 32 shots from the floor for 47% and Central hit 62.5% from the field hitting 15-24 shots. Postville hit 50% from three point land making 5 of 10 baskets and the Warriors hit 6 of 21 baskets from outside the arch for 28.5%.

"After we regained the lead, I thought we had them where we wanted them," Patterson noted.

Postville seniors Matt Moore, and Aandi Deering played their final high school basketball game.

“Our seniors were great role players for us, and really understood the team concept," Sass said. "You can't find that just anywhere.”

Aandi Deering and Nick Zieman led Postville with 13 points each. Darren Kraus and Andy Livigood each chipped in 7 points.

Central was led by Bauder’s 23 points. Pat Grau and Derek Bergen tossed in 7 points each for the Warriors.
