RACHEL REISER WINS 3000 METER DISTRICT TITLE, IS LONE STATE QUALIFIER FOR INDIAN TRACK GIRLS; INDIANS FOURTH AT WAVERLY-SHELL ROCK INVITATIONAL

All but one member of the Waukon Indian girls track team will be competing in their final meet of the season this Thursday, May 11 at the Northeast Iowa Conference meet in Charles City. With that NEIC meet being the final team meet on this year's schedule, the Monday, May 8 Class 2A District Track Meet the Indians competed in extended only the season of senior distance runner Rachel Reiser to this year's state track meet.
Reiser won the 3000 meter run at that Class 2A District Meet, earning automatic qualification for this year's state track meet, which will be held May 19-20 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. Before that state meet, the Indians will wrap up their team season this Thursday, May 11 at the Northeast Iowa Conference meet in Charles City.

"We ran well, but I think we still could have run even better," Waukon girls track coach Don Steffens said. "We were coming off of Prom this past weekend, and it takes quite a long time for the kids to recover from a late night like that. In spite of that, we did have seven or eight overall team bests for the meet, which was a great way to end our junior varsity season."
The lone Indian win in the meet came from senior Rachel Reiser in the 3000 meter run. That victory had added meaning to it when it was achieved in school record time, Reiser breaking the tape with a clocking of 11:09.61, two seconds better than the previous mark of 11:11.75 set in 1994 by 1997 Waukon Senior High graduate Tara Lyons, who is now running cross country and track for Coe College in Cedar Rapids.
"Rachel pretty much ran by herself, there wasn't anybody within 250 yards of her," Coach Steffens said. "If she had had someone running with her, she could very well have been under 11 minutes. Just a great, great effort by her and the conditions were ideal for distance running, there was no wind."
The 3000 meter run also featured one of the Tribe's second-place finishes, as freshman Lane Palmer completed the Indian one-two finish in the event with her runner-up effort in a time of 11:59.11. The other second-place Indian finish was recorded by the shuttle hurdle relay team, as junior Crystal Magner, sophomores Erin Daley and Jaime Welch, and freshman Lindsey Wirth teamed up for runner-up honors in 1:12.09.
Two of the Tribe's three third-place finishes came at the 400 meter distance, one with obstacles and the other without. Magner finished third in the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 1:12.41, while sophomore Melissa Kleinow was third in the 400 meter dash in 1:04.21. Kleinow also had a leg in the other third-place Indian finish, anchoring the sprint medley relay team to third in 2:02.23. Freshman Amy Nordheim and sophomores Shelby Nordheim and Jaime Welch joined Kleinow for that finish.

"Our junior varsity kids ran very well in their final meet of the season," Coach Steffens said. "It was a good meet for them, we had a lot of young kids pick up some very important points toward their letters."

The Tribe's 4x800 and distance medley relays also finished second in the meet, seniors Beth Martin and Lacy O'Neill, junior Karen Egan and sophomore Danielle Jamieson teaming up in the 4x800 for a time of 12:20.76 and sophomore Jayne Allison and freshmen Melissa Simmons, Maria Magner and Bethany Hammel combining their efforts in the distance medley for a clocking of 5:00.71.

District meet ...
Looking to extend their season beyond this week, members of the Waukon Indian girls track team competed in their Class 2A District Track Meet Monday, May 8 at North Fayette of West Union in hopes of qualifying for the state track meet later this month.
That hope came true for just one of this year's team members, as senior distance runner Rachel Reiser allowed her season-long dominance in the 3000 meter run to carry her right on in to the state meet, winning the event at the district meet in a time of 11:17.21. Reiser will now compete in the Class 2A 3000 meter run at this year's state track meet in Des Moines Friday, May 19.
"Rachel ran exceptionally well in the wind," Waukon girls track coach Don Steffens said. "She just walked away from everybody else and ended up winning by 14 seconds, which is considerable in the 3000 meters. She led the race from the very beginning and just pulled away. We really don't know what she can do, because she hasn't really been pushed this year. The state meet will be a whole new experience for her, because she's never been down there before."
For the second consecutive season, Indian junior 400 meter hurdler Crystal Magner came about as close as one can get to qualifying for the state meet in that event, missing out this season by less than two-tenths of a second. Her third-place finish at the district meet in 1:11.25 was just a heartbeat off the Class 2A qualifying time of 1:11.07.
"Crystal looked good running, but about the fifth hurdle she stumbled a bit and lost her rhythm," Coach Steffens said. "It's disappointing for her, especially after being about that close last year (half a second off the qualifying time), but that's all part of high school athletics."
A more complete run-down of the Indians' performances at the district meet will appear in next week's issue of The Waukon Standard.
