School board seats, funding measures on September 13 School Election ballots

Voters in the Allamakee Community and Eastern Allamakee Community School Districts will be joining those statewide in going to the voting polls for the Tuesday, September 13 School Election. Area voters will not only be seeking to elect leadership to their respective School Boards, but also voting to continue their respective funding levies labeled Public Measure C on each particular ballot.
The funding measures include a Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL) in the Allamakee Community School District that was first approved by voters nearly 10 years ago and is simply being asked for renewal for another 10 years. Further details on that PPEL are explained in the accompanying article.
Likewise, voters in the Eastern Allamakee Community School District will be asked to give their approval to allow continuation of an instructional support levy that has been in place for nearly two decades. Further details on that funding measure are outlined in a separate article at right as well.

SCHOOL BOARD SEATS
Both the Allamakee Community School District (ACSD) and Eastern Allamakee Community School District (EACSD) have three seats each on their respective Boards of Directors up for election this fall. Some seats in each school district have current board members seeking re-election, while others have new candidates or no current candidates declared.
In the ACSD, both Patty Fosaaen, District #3 Director, and Greg Byrnes, District #2 Director, are seeking re-election to those seats, while District #4 has Tim Waters as a newly declared candidate to replace long-time board member Dwight Watkins, who opted to not seek re-election this year. Fosaaen has served on the board since April 2003, while Byrnes was appointed to fill the District #2 seat near the end of last year after Bob Hager resigned the seat following his election to the Iowa House of Representatives.
EACSD voters will be asked to re-elect Bobbie Goetzinger to another board term in District #2, while two other open board seats do not currently have any declared candidates. District #1 has been without board representation since the resignation of Tonja Colsch earlier this past year and nobody else accepting appointment to the position. District #3 will also require a new candidate, as current board member Lisa Rethwisch will not be seeking re-election. Both seats could be filled by write-in candidates in the September 13 election.

Polling sites will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 13, with absentee voting available at the Allamakee County Auditor's Office through Monday, September 12. EACSD voters will vote at either the Kerndt Brothers Savings Bank Community Center in Lansing or at the New Albin Community Center. Polling sites for ACSD voters include St. Mary's Church in Dorchester, the NICC Center in Waukon, Waterville City Hall, and the Harpers Ferry Community Center.
