Gil Hunstad, president of the school board opened the meeting and thanked
everyone for attending and for being so committed to the facilities
committee. He turned the meeting over to Fran Gruenhaupt, facilities
advisory committee chairman.

Mrs. Gruenhaupt explained what the committee has accomplished to date. She
wanted the school board to understand that the work of the committee is not
in any way completed and the items explained are merely ideas that we are
discussing. The committee is still gathering information and working
toward a plan to solve our facilities building repair problems.

Three main issues were discussed with the school board.

First, our committee feels that safety issues within our school facilities
should be addressed as soon as possible. For instance, there were a number
of electrical issues including lack of grounding and lack of adequate power
supply to support technical systems in the buildings. Another item was no
GFI's in shower and bathrooms. We also asked for the school boards
assessment of the urgency of repairs to the junior high.

Second, we shared five options that the committee has developed. We are
not in agreement about a certain plan to recommend. But, we wanted the
school board to see the work in progress to get additional ideas and
opinions.

Third, we expressed our concern with the damaged roofs of the school
buildings. We think the roof repair should be done as soon as possible to
prevent further damage to our buildings.

These three issues were discussed at great length. It was agreed that the
committee is on the right track and they were commended by the school board
for their diligent work. The committee must move quickly but thoroughly
because of the urgency of safety and the roof repairs. The lack of PPEL
funding or lack of funding in general was the reason for delays in roof
repair.

Elisha Marti was in attendance at the meeting representing the Waukon
Standard and the Lansing Journal. She will continue to cover the progress
of the facility committee in order to educate and keep the public informed.

The next meeting was set for Thursday, June 1, 2000 at 7:30 p.m. at the
Allamakee Community Junior High building.

Respectfully submitted,

Mary Jo Meyer
