Seventh annual Dollars for Scholars Phone-athon will get underway next week

The seventh annual Allamakee Dollars for Scholars Phone-athon will begin the last week of February from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, and will also be conducted February 24 and March 1. This event is the major fundraiser for the organization and is conducted by the student applicants in conjunction with the Dollars for Scholars board.
Students will be calling from phone banks at Waukon High School, Waukon State Bank and Farmers and Merchants Bank, all in Waukon; Waterville Elementary School in Waterville; and American Express Financial Advisers-Arne Beneke in Caledonia, MN.
All funds raised from the phone-athon will be awarded this spring to scholarship applicants of the Allamakee Community School District (ACSD) Class of 2005. Pledges need to be returned by April 1 so that spring scholarship plans by the organization can be completed.
Besides the pledge support solicited during the phone-athon, students will have information to share with school district residents about the Dollars for Scholars organization and activities. Since 1993, Allamakee Dollars for Scholars has awarded nearly $230,000 in scholarships to 630 graduating seniors in the ACSD.
Julie Rotach, Allamakee Dollars for Scholars chapter president stated, " Every dollar raised goes to student scholarships and is tax-deductible. The community encouragement for the students has been super in past years and we hope to continue that educational support this year. With the busy schedules people have, some people may not be available for the calls from the students. If someone does not receive a call and wishes to make a pledge, donations can be sent to Allamakee Dollars for Scholars, Box 144, Waukon." Contributions also can be made at the Dollars for Scholars Recognition Breakfast April 15 at 7:30 am at Waukon Senior High School.
