Supervisors hear update on newly-created Coordinator for Disabilities Services position

by Bob Beach

The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors met Tuesday, January 28 with interim Coordinator for Disabilities Services Kim Waters, who reported that things are going well with the newly-created position, noting that many of the duties are the same as her duties as Case Management Director, adding that the new system is more cost effective for the County. Waters summarized a recent meeting of the County Social Services (CSS) Board, noting that there will be no change in levy rates, despite the fact that some of the counties within the region levy at the maximum while others do not. She said that the CSS Board reasoned that the counties that are not levying at the maximum rate for mental health and disabilities services were raising adequate funds for their needs prior to joining the region. Waters also reported that Case Management has been recertified by Magellan.
The Board also held a brief discussion regarding the scheduling and location of three of its meetings later this year. County Auditor Denise Beyer said that Veterans Day, November 11, would fall on a Tuesday this year and that the Board would need to reschedule that day's regular meeting for either the Monday prior to or the Wednesday following the holiday. Beyer also pointed out that Tuesday, June 3 and Tuesday, November 4 the Board room would be used for the primary and general elections, so the Board would need to reschedule or relocate the meetings on those dates. The Board voted to meet Monday, November 10 due to Veterans Day falling on Tuesday and to move its meetings scheduled for Tuesday, June 3 and Tuesday, November 4 to the employee break room on the first floor of the courthouse.
The Board also met in closed session to discuss ongoing negotiations with the unions representing Secondary Roads and Sheriff's Department employees.
In other business, the Board accepted and placed on file quarterly reports from Veterans Affairs and Planning and Zoning. The Board also approved parade route detours around Waukon and plans for a concrete overlay on County Road W60 north of Old Highway 9.
