Swine Finishing Seminars set for February 9 in Nashua


Iowa State University Extension, Iowa Pork Industry Center, Iowa Pork Producers Association, Fayette County Farm Bureau, and Floyd County Farm Bureau are sponsoring two swine finisher seminars. The first is scheduled on February 9 at the National Guard Armory in Oelwein and the second will be held February 10 at the ISU Northeast Research Farm in Nashua.  The seminars will start with registration at 9:45 a.m. and go to 3:05 p.m.  Pork producers who manage or own wean to finish and finish facilities and finisher allied industry representatives will want to attend.  Seminar speakers will discuss health, manure research, environment, nutrition, and management tips on raising finishers successfully. 
 Dr. James McKean, ISU Extension DVM, will discuss finisher vaccinations and why they are being used and which ones to use. Dr. Wendy Powers, ISU Environmental Issues Specialist, will discuss odor research including her own studies at Ames. Chad Ingels, ISU Manure Nutrient Specialist, will discuss calculating the phosphorus index needed in the new DNR manure management plan forms. Dan Meyer, ISU Ag Engineer field specialist, will give an update on DNR manure regulations and the new manure management plan forms. He will also summarize a survey of finisher fuel and electricity costs and discuss how to minimize them. Bob Puls, a local electrician, will discuss correctly wiring your controller's back-up systems. Kelvin Leibold, ISU Farm Management Specialist, will discuss estate planning. Mark Storlie, ISU Swine Specialist will do an update on nutrition and management. The seminars will include a producer panel on wean to finish management and finish management tips. 
The Oelwein National Guard Armory is located at 200 Tenth Street (on Highway 150 near the Super 8 motel).  The ISU Northeast Research Farm is located at 3321 290th Street, Nashua (take Highway 218 south from Nashua a mile, go west about 1.5 miles on 290th Street - a gravel road).
