A tribute to a great doctor

Dr. Milton F. Kiesau was the epitome of the very best of family M.D.'s. He h ad a remarkable career that spanned more than 60 years as a practicing physician and surgeon. He also served more than four years as an army medical officer both in the U. S. and Europe, during World War II.
The following adjectives accurately describe Dr. Kiesau. He was very capable, caring faithful, generous, compassionate, loyal and dedicated to serving his patients with the best medical care. He had an amazing clam, peaceful demeanor even during crisis situations. "Doc" (as he was affectionately called by most of us) delivered a bout 2,500 babies in the Postville area. He was our family doctor for 43 years and delivered three of our children. He was always "on call" and spent countless nights and holidays in an unselfish manner giving medical treatment to his patients.
Dr. Kiesau was a superb diagnostician and surgeon. Not only was he a skilled doctor, but also a community leader. He and his gracious wife, Pauline were respected supportive members of church, school and community activities.
In 1958 our old, small and out-of-date hospital was served notice by the Iowa Hospital licensing board that it would not be issued a license and had one year to come up with a choice of building a new hospital or closing. At this time I was elected to the hospital board of trustees. We relied on Dr. Kiesau, along with Doctor Wolf and Dr. Kettlekamp for advice and Dr. Kiesau gave many hours of his time working with the architect and trustees to develop plans for a new 36-bed hospital which became a reality in 1960 and was fully funded by contributions, including a very large gift from the Kiesau family.
Dr. Milton and his wife, Pauline were also very active in the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in many supportive ways. Dr. Kiesau served more th an 35 years on the Good "Sam" board. It seemed fitting that he spent his last days there and passed away peacefully the morning of January 20, 2005 at the age of 96.
"Doc" also was part of the planning, building and occupying of East Park Terrace Condominium where he and Pauline lived the past seven years. He served several years as President of the Board. We all enjoyed the many hours of good visiting and fellowship with "Doc."
"Doc" left a wonderful legacy to h is family, his community, and his country. God bless his memory. We extend our deep sympathy to his family as th they grieve his loss.
