Waukon Chamber offering reward for information on Waukon sign vandalism

The Waukon Chamber of Commerce is offering a reward for information leading to the identification of the person(s) who vandalized the Waukon sign located on Highway 9, west of Waukon. Lissa Blake, Director of the Waukon Chamber, said her office was notified of the vandalism last week.
Brian Bodensteiner of Bodensteiner Body Werks in Waukon immediately tried to remove the paint, but said the sign would ultimately need to be redone. He estimated the damage at approximately $1,000.
“It’s really unfortunate,” said Blake. “So many people have spent countless hours and a significant amount of money to make those signs a reality.”
Blake explained just last year the Chamber paid almost $4,000 for renovation of the other Waukon sign, east of Waukon on Highway 76. “There are also those members of the sign committee who donated countless hours to make those signs a reality. And volunteers like Danny and Sue Schlitter, who faithfully attended to the landscaping of the signs for many years,” added Blake.
Blake noted the Chamber often receives compliments on the signs and has received several inquiries from other communities that wish to emulate the design of the Waukon signs. “These signs are something for which this community should be proud,” she said.
