Waukon High School conducts lockdown for student, staff safety

Tuesday, November 5, Waukon High School conducted a lockdown of classrooms and offices for approximately 15 minutes. The Waukon Police Department, in conjunction with the Allamakee County Sheriff’s Department, entered the school to question an individual they thought could be a possible threat to the school's students or staff members.
The issue was resolved immediately and without incident. Waukon Police Chief Phil Young described the issue as "a misunderstanding" in regard to a text message that was misinterpreted, with the lockdown and other action taken being the result of school and law enforcement officials choosing to err on the side of caution.
"We will continue to review security systems that we currently have in place and hold periodic lockdown drills," Allamakee Community School District Superintendent Dave Herold commented in a released statement. "Again, we take our students' and staff safety very seriously and will take every precaution available to ensure their safety."
