“Get Your Walk On in Waukon” Family Fun Walk with optional 5K during Waukon Corn Days - free event

Veterans Memorial Hospital will be sponsoring their 26th annual 5K Cardiac Classic Run/Walk on Saturday, August 4, in conjunction with the Waukon Corn Days celebration. This year, the event again welcomes a shorter walking route with an optional 5K to offer distances that will please everyone of any age or ability that wishes to participate. This event is being co-sponsored by the “Walk-On Waukon” fundraising committee who has been raising funds for this past year to extend the walking paths in the city of Waukon. Veterans Memorial Hospital will be sponsoring their 26th annual 5K Cardiac Classic Run/Walk Saturday, August 4, in conjunction with the Waukon Corn Days celebration. This year, the event again welcomes a shorter walking route with an optional 5K to offer distances that will please everyone of any age or ability that wishes to participate.

The event will begin and end at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon at 8 a.m. with registration beginning at 7 a.m.

VMH Auxiliary membership drive ...

The Auxiliary of Veterans Memorial Hospital is devoted to providing the hospital and its patients and visitors with many services. Their annual membership drive is on now.  Auxiliary membership dues are just $5 for active members and $12 for inactive members. Pictured are some members of the Auxiliary of Veterans Memorial Hospital knitting baby hats for the infants born at the hospital.  Some of these hats are also available in the Auxiliary gift case for purchase as gifts for newborns. The Auxiliary meets monthly the second Monday of each month, at 1 p.m., in the ICN Conference Room at Veterans Memorial Hospital. They also hold a monthly Euchre Marathon tournament the third Thursday of each month at the Senior Citizens Room at the Waukon Wellness Center. Memorials received by Health Care Foundation

Memorials were recently received by the Veterans Memorial Health Care Foundation in memory of Thomas Howe by Delora and Monte Dundee, Joyce Kuhse and Gayle Larkin.

Memorials were also received in memory of John Herman by Lillian Larson, in memory of Pastor Lynn Groe by Dr. Arlen and Karlene Wonderlich, in memory of Ralph and Joann Welch by Bill and Sue Blagsvedt, and in memory of Mitch Einck by Bill and Sue Blagsvedt.

In addition, a donation was received in honor of Wayne and Nona Sawyer’s 60th Wedding Anniversary by Dennis and Sandy Deal.

A donation to the Foundation was also received by Skip and Heidi Loebig.

Martin and Karen Brennan of Lansing, parents of the bride-to-be, and Jon and Jean West of Dubuque, parents of the groom-to-be, announce the engagement and upcoming wedding of Alison Brennan of Lansing and Mark West of Dubuque. The couple will exchange vows Saturday, July 28 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Dubuque.

The bride-to-be is a graduate of Kee High School in Lansing and Loras College in Dubuque and is employed as a Health and Physical Education Teacher at Audubon Elementary School in Dubuque. The groom-to-be is a graduate of Hempstead High School in Dubuque and Iowa State University in Ames and is employed as a Math Teacher at Hempstead High School in Dubuque.

Bob and Bonnie Wild of rural Lansing, parents of the bride-to-be, and Doug and Teresa Berg of Frankville, parents of the groom-to-be, announce the engagement and upcoming wedding of Bobbi Jo Wild of Lansing and Kollin Berg of Frankville.

The couple will exchange vows Saturday, August 25 with a ceremony to be held at the Wild family farm in rural Lansing. A reception will follow at the Waukon Banquet Center.

The bride-to-be is a 2011 graduate of Waukon High School and a 2015 graduate of South Dakota State University with a Bachelors degree in Dairy Production and Agriculture Leadership. She is employed as a Customer Service Agent at Upper Iowa Insurance Services in Waukon and is active with the family dairy farm.

The groom-to-be is a 2006 graduate of Postville High School and is employed at Schroeder Brothers Farms near Eitzen, MN. The couple will reside in rural Lansing.

Elyse Weinberg and Jared Laures of Iowa City wish to announce their engagement and wedding to take place August 4 at the Mayowood Stone Barn in Rochester, MN.

Parents of the bride-to-be are Lydie Weinberg and the late Bryan Weinberg of Gurnee, IL. Parents of the groom-to-be are June and Arnie Laures of Waukon.

The bride-to-be is a 2010 graduate of Warren Township High School in Gurnee, IL and a 2014 graduate of Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, IN with a Bachelor of Science Nursing degree. She is a Pediatric Intensive Care Nurse at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital and is a PhD graduate student in the University of Iowa’s Nursing Program.

The groom-to-be is a 2009 graduate of Waukon High School and a 2013 graduate of the University of Iowa with a degree in Biology, Chemistry and Sustainability. He is employed as a Process Engineer at Integrated DNA Technologies in Coralville.

Paul and Kathy Howes 50th wedding anniversary celebration set for August 4

Paul and Kathy Howes of Waukon are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary August 4 with a casual reception at the Empty Nest Winery, 1352 Apple Road, Waukon. All friends and relatives are encouraged to join them for a celebration of their marriage from 3-6 p.m. No gifts are requested.

The couple exchanged vows November 23, 1968. Due to the unpredictable weather conditions in November and the proximity to Thanksgiving, the August date was chosen as an alternative time for their anniversary celebration. Their children are Jennifer (John) Kuzma of Clearwater, FL and Jason and Laurie (Maxwell) Howes of Dorchester.

Bulman Family Reunion held July 15

The 60th annual Bulman reunion was held Sunday, July 15 at the Eitzen Community Center in Eitzen, MN. A noon potluck dinner was enjoyed by descendants of James and Elizabeth Bulman of Little Thetford, England (70 miles north of London). The five Bulman ancestors who came to America from Little Thetford were Thomas, William, George, Mary and John. A sailing ship took them from Liverpool, England to New Orleans, LA then upriver to Evansville, IL. They stayed there approximately five years before driving horse and wagons to

English Bench near Dorchester and settling there around the hill called “The Elephant”.

President Bruce Bulman of Caledonia, MN led the business meeting following the meal. This year, 50 persons were in attendance.   Grace Bulman and Debbie and Brad Harguth set up for the meal. They will continue next year by setting up and making the future reservation of the center. Laina Ford and Cheri Wiedenmann Francik were at the registration table.

James and Kelli Melcher of Harpers Ferry announce the birth of their son, Declan James Melcher, born July 13, 2018 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. He weighed 8 lbs. 3 ozs. and measured 22-1/4 inches in length at the time of his birth.

Grandparents are Rob and Shannon Lloyd of Harpers Ferry, Jeff and Sara Melcher of Waukon and Chris and Brian Koth of Elkport. Great-grandparents are Erlyss Reckard of Monona, Ernie and Pat Burroughs of Waukon, Roger and Karen Melcher of Harpers Ferry and Ralph and Diane Mohn of Harpers Ferry.
