Marcella Johnson of Waukon will be celebrating her 90th birthday with an open house from 4-7 p.m. Saturday, October 21 at the Waukon City Club Banquet Room. She was born October 31, 1927. Those unable to attend may send cards and well wishes to her at 960 Fourth St. NW, Waukon, IA 52172.
Brittany Davis of Elgin announces the birth of her son, Jaxson Avery Davis, born October 9, 2017 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. He weighed 7 lbs. 2 ozs. and measured 20 inches in length at the time of his birth. He joins a brother, Quinton (2). Grandparents are Ron and Rena Stoffel of Postville.
Allamakee County continues to make progress with the updating of its hazard mitigation plan.
According to Allamakee County Emergency Management Coordinator Corey Snitker, the County received a grant from Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management (IHSEM) to contract with Upper Explorerland Regional Planning Commission (UERPC) to help update the County’s plan.
In order to be eligible for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funding following a disaster, counties have to have a hazard mitigation plan on file. The plan must be updated every five years in order for a county to maintain its eligibility for funding.
“Each county’s emergency management coordinator has to make sure the plans are updated within their counties. Our last plan was done in 2012, so it’s expiring,” said Snitker.
The sixth annual local Fields of Faith event in Waukon was held Wednesday, October 11 at the Waukon High School football field to share in an evening of faith-filled messages. The featured highlight of the evening was the presentation by Jake Vanada (pictured in center photo), a resident of Minneapolis, MN who currently serves as Chaplain for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Supercross and Motocross Series of motorcycle racing. Within his energy-filled message that he related to the sports venue where the event was held once again this year, Vanada encouraged those in attendance to do two things in order to have a more fulfilling faith life: "Listen to the Coach" and "Obey the Coach," with that "Coach" being the Lord and all of those in attendance being players in the game of life.
Supervisors try out impaired driving simulator ... The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors met in regular session Monday, October 16 to address a full agenda of items, including the discussion of contracting medical services for the Allamakee County Public Safety Center jail facility, approval of the Conservation Board Management Agreement for the Village Creek Boat Landing and discussion of a potential new two-way radio/communications tower to be built on the County Farm.
Waukon High School has several former student-athletes who have taken their skills and careers into the college ranks again this year. However, this year there is also one former student-athlete who has extended his musical career to that "next level" as well.
Aaron Sherman is a freshmen at the University of Iowa in Iowa City and is spending his Saturdays playing trombone with the Hawkeye Marching Band. Sherman is a 2017 graduate of Waukon High School and the son of Mark and JoAnn Sherman of Waukon.
Unlike high school, one does not just enroll in marching band at the University of Iowa. In July, Sherman had to audition during orientation for the marching band. He was first told he would be an alternate for the marching band, but within hours of that notification, he received an email message stating that a position had opened up for him for this fall with the marching Hawkeyes.
The Waukon City Council met in regular session Monday, October 16 to address a variety of matters, including the 2019 Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) Project, the purchase of equipment for the Waukon Police Department and discussion of a potential sidewalk project.
Thornton Manor Nursing Center in Lansing, along with the Lansing Fire Department, Lansing Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Allamakee County Emergency Management conducted an Emergency Preparedness Exercise for the facility Wednesday, October 11. The basis of the exercise was to test the readiness of the nursing facility as well as the fire department and EMS personnel in the event of a disaster. Thornton Manor chose to conduct a fire emergency during Fire Prevention Week in which they simulated a fire and evacuation of residents along with victims with injuries. Thornton Manor conducts monthly fire drills. This exercise allowed the facility to take the drill to another level by having fire personnel help aid in the evacuation along with their plan to fight a fire within the building. Lansing EMS was also able to plan what steps they would take with multiple injuries in the event of a larger disaster.
The regular meeting of the Lansing City Council was held Monday, October 16 with not a lot of items on the meeting agenda. Discussion included Marina Board improvement projects and an update on the proposal for street lights throughout the city.
Members of the Marina Board and dock owners within the City Marina were present at the meeting with a request for an improvement project that would update the docks at the marina. Before proceeding with the project, the council has asked for price quotes regarding the project.
Detailed discussion about fixing the street lights will be postponed until the council has an idea of a permanent solution, the cost of the project, and has time to look at all of the information.
The Friends of Pool 9 recently held its Volunteer Appreciation Dinner which also culminated the annual fundraising efforts for the non-profit organization. One aspect of these efforts is the annual raffle drawing, which featured a chance to win a pair of prize packages. Each contribution helps to support the Friends of Pool 9 volunteer organization in its ongoing efforts. The benefit of these efforts is realized by individuals who enjoy a river experience due to cleaner beaches with safe and expanded facilities such as fire pits and portable toilets. The river pool also thrives in a healthier state with increased wildlife and natural habitat due to clean-up and enhancement projects. Finally, children develop an informed interest in nature enabling them to become future stewards of their resources through educational adventure programs. Donations are accepted throughout the year.
