What's Up at the USDA Office?

Upcoming Deadlines/Dates
May 15 - August 1: Primary Nesting Season

Late Summer Pasture Seeding
by Jacob Hawes, NRCS Area Grazing Specialist
The late summer seeding window begins in August for pasture and hay plantings, and although it is not as popular as the spring seeding option, it can still be a great opportunity to get cool season pastures established this year. There are several advantages to seeding late summer versus the spring, that may ease some apprehensions about seeding during this timeframe.

Vigilance is key to preventing tick bites

Ticks, and the pathogens they carry, can pose a serious risk to human health. As the weather warms and Iowans spend more time outside, the risk of tick diseases can be lowered by avoiding ticks, checking for tick hitchhikers upon returning indoors, and removing any attached ticks promptly and effectively.

More than a dozen species of ticks can be found in Iowa, according to Laura Iles, director and extension plant pathologist with the North Central Integrated Pest Management Center. However, the three most common species are the blacklegged or deer tick, the American dog or wood tick and the lone star tick. All three species can transmit bacteria that cause disease, but only the blacklegged tick transmits Lyme disease, making it a species of particular concern.

Letter to the Editor: Submitted by Arlen L. Wonderlich

To the Editor:

The speed limit on the Great River Road south of Lansing is 35 mph from just past the Lansing Harpers Road until you pass Columbus Road by the Driftless Area Education Center, where it changes to 45 mph. Of interest; at the intersection of Whalen Hill Road and Great River Road the visibility to the west is very limited; however, the speed limit has already been changed to 45 mph!

A short distance past the intersection with Whalen Hill Road the speed limit increases from 45 mph to 55 mph. The 55 mph is in effect from that point until you reach Harpers Ferry.

I have met with the Allamakee County Board of Supervisors asking them to consider reducing the speed limit from just past the Whalen Hill intersection to access to the Alliant Energy property, a distance of 1.8 miles. This reduction in speed from 55 mph to 45 mph would require an extra 25 seconds of driving time.

Chance meeting with author of book on domestic abuse described as “God at work” for Kelly Wille of Waukon

Book-signing event scheduled for July 24 at Wille’s home in Waukon

Some would call it destiny or fate. Others would perhaps refer to it as “happenstance”.

For Kelly Wille of Waukon, she calls her chance encounter with the northeast Iowa author of a “memoir of spousal abuse” just over a week ago “God at work.”

Whatever the description, Wille’s Friday, July 7 meeting of Joyce Gibbs (also known by her author pseudonym Kate Klaver and on social media as Jenny Lue) has now developed into a newfound support system for both ladies, perhaps a resource for many others, distribution of more than 150 free books in less than a week’s time, and ultimately a book-signing event that all are invited to attend Monday, July 24 in Waukon.
