August is Kids Eat Right Month®; Parents, caregivers can serve as role models

submitted by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

The 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans noted that many school-aged children are not eating enough of the recommended amounts of certain food groups, including vegetables, fruits and dairy. As a result, they may not be consuming the nutrients they need to support their growing bodies.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and its Foundation say parents and caregivers can play a significant role in children’s nutrition and health by teaching kids about healthful foods, being good role models and making sure physical activity is incorporated into each day.

Free blood pressure, blood sugar, stem cell testing at Lansing Music in the Park

Veterans Memorial Hospital will be visiting Lansing’s Music in the Park Thursday evening, August 24, offering free Blood Sugar Testing and Blood Pressure checks with immediate results by Angie Mettille, Diabetes Educator.  The hospital typically offers these two tests at most all area events and often times catches individuals who unknowingly have high results. Both of these checks take just a few seconds to perform and are free of charge.

This summer, Veterans Memorial Hospital has been offering “Be the Match” stem cell sampling for everyone ages 18-40 at all events they are attending.  “Be the Match” sampling is quick, easy, painless and can truly save a life. This is the same program that Robin Roberts from Good Morning America endorses following her own successful bone marrow transplant match 10 years ago.

Blood Donor Day set

Did you know one in seven people entering the hospital will need blood?

Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) in Waukon invites the community to attend the next LifeServe Blood Center Blood Drive Thursday, September 7, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., at the First Baptist Church in south Waukon. Blood drives are held once per month in Waukon. The LifeServe Blood Center supplies Veterans Memorial Hospital with its blood and blood products.

The LifeServe Blood Center is seeking donors to ensure a safe and plentiful blood supply in Iowa. Because there is no substitute for human blood, the need for donors is continuous.

Over half of the United States population is eligible to donate blood, yet less than four percent donate on a regular basis. A single donation of blood can be used to save up to three lives and help in treatment of cancer patients, accident victims, hemophiliacs and surgery patients.

Letter to the Editor: Submitted by Arthur Clocksin

To the Editor:

My wife and I enjoyed seeing the production of “Rent” at Waukon’s Main Feature Theater after the Corn Days meal. The acting and the singing were great. It seems that every time Wolfpack Theater Company puts out a production, it ends up being a big hit.

My only concern is that even a great production such as “Rent” may keep some potential attenders away because of its moral content. Someone said to me after urging me to attend, “Definitely go, but you might choose not to invite your church friends.”

Perhaps a solution may be for the Wolfpack directors to see if they could obtain a high school edition of the play, which is often available, to give a more toned-down and less morally objectionable version of the play.

Meanwhile, I look forward to seeing the production of “Guys and Dolls” in November. I think that Adam Hooten and his Wolfpack team are once again working on a great upcoming show.

Waukon Golf & Country Club observing its 100-year anniversary this year; August 19 celebration planned for members and non-members

Among the early membership ... The membership card pictured above comes from the early years of existence for the Waukon Golf & Country Club, as indicated by the 1925 date shown toward the top of the card. The card is just some of the memorabilia that is part of the Waukon Golf & Country Club’s 100-year history being celebrated this year with an August 19 event. Submitted photo.

Evolution of the WG&CC clubhouse ... The three surrounding photos (one above and two below) show how the clubhouse at the Waukon Golf & Country clubhouse has changed during the 100-year history of the golf course. The photo above shows the original clubhouse, which was constructed in 1934 and still exists today as a multi-unit residence now owned by Pat and Kathy McMillan of Waukon. A city street, 1st Street SE, now runs between the building and the area pictured in the foreground of that photo directly below, which back then was the number-one tee but today is the number-nine tee. The current clubhouse, pictured in the photo below, was originally constructed in 1963, with more recent additions and improvements being made to the original structure during the 1990s. Submitted photos.

Original number-one tee ... Photo above shows a busy start to a day on the links at the original number-one tee at the Waukon Golf & Country Club. That number-one tee from the early years of the golf course is now where the number-nine tee is located. Submitted photo.

Although a golf score of 100 is nothing to brag about, a golf course being open for 100 years certainly is. Saturday, August 19, the Waukon Golf & Country Club (WGCC) will celebrate its 100th anniversary with a special celebration. The public is invited to a program featuring interviews by Chuck Bloxham at 6:30 p.m., followed by a dance from 7-10 p.m. featuring John and Jim Withers, sons of longtime Waukon physician Dr. Bill Withers and the late Libby Withers, who were longtime social members of the Club, along with Keel Clemmens, who joined the Withers brothers and others in being part of the Bandmates, Brothers and Friends band that played a reunion event in Waukon in May of this year. A cash bar will be available.

The Reluctant Hero: A local Navy Veteran shares his real-life story

Glenn McCune...
Glenn McCune...
USS Norfolk (DL-1) ...
USS Norfolk (DL-1) ...

by Dwight Jones

Webster’s Dictionary describes the word “unbelievable” as meaning “too improbable for belief”. While working on the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) related stories that recently ran in this newspaper, I came to have a conversation with a gentleman by the name of Glenn McCune of Harpers Ferry. My wife and I have a summer cabin in Harpers Ferry and Glenn is our next door neighbor. A tall wooden fence separates our properties and though I’ve seen Glenn and spoken with him a few times, we had never really “talked”. That all changed when he stopped by recently and told me a story, an unbelievable but absolutely true story of Navy heroism from nearly 60 years ago that he has shared with very few people, not even family, until now.
