Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge proposes environmental education, interpretation opportunities

Public comment sought through mid-August of this year

National wildlife refuges across the country offer quality opportunities to connect with special places in a variety of ways. Before any activity can be allowed on a national wildlife refuge, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service must first evaluate that use through a Compatibility Determination.

The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge is updating and re-evaluating to what extent and how environmental education and interpretation occurs on the refuge. The Refuge is seeking public comment on the re-evaluation of this use on the refuge.

The public is invited to review the draft compatibility determination document that includes the Refuge’s justification and analysis. The document was made available beginning July 18, 2023 and will be available for 30 days for public comment.

Corps of Engineers seeks public comment on cultural resources protection project at Sny Magill Unit focused on damage control for burial mounds

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is seeking comment on a bank stabilization study at the Sny Magill unit of Effigy Mounds National Monument, near Harpers Ferry. The purpose of this project is to stabilize the shoreline of the Sny Magill unit and reduce damage to the integrity of the Native American burial and ceremonial mounds at Effigy Mounds National Monument (Park).

Opportunities to improve aquatic and floodplain forest habitat are also being investigated. This study will inform future management of areas within the Mississippi River.

The mounds preserved within the Park are a unique and significant cultural resource considered sacred by many Americans, especially the culturally associated tribal nations. Shoreline erosion caused by more frequent and prolonged high-water events uniquely threaten the Sny Magill unit’s mounds.

Waukon softball team plays to first winning record in 13 seasons with 16-15 campaign

The Waukon softball team played to a 16-15 season record that may seem to be about average on paper but was actually well above average in so many more aspects. That 16-15 result marks the first time in more than a decade that the diamond Tribe has recorded both a winning record and 15 wins in a season.

“I think our greatest accomplishment was how well these girls played together and never gave up in any game we played,” Waukon softball coach Melissa Ward shared. “It showed in how close of games we played and our ending record this season. Our 16-15 record is the first year since 2010 where the softball program has won more than 15 games and had a winning record. It’s hard to have teams that know each other as well as this squad did. The experience and leadership this team had was great. There will be a solid group of returners coming back next year, so being able to play the game the way we know how will be what we need to build on moving forward.”
