The Kee volleyball team continued its brilliant postseason run and is now one match away from its first-ever State Tournament qualification after another five-set thriller Thursday, October 26 at 10th-rated Dunkerton. The Lady Hawks bolted to a two-set edge with victories of 27-25 and 25-20, but then let the host Raiders back into the match by suffering losses of 16-25 and 20-25 to force a fifth and deciding set. After another back-and-forth battle, the Hawks pulled out the 15-10 victory to earn the upset and advancement to the Tuesday, October 31 Region 5 championship match to play for a berth in the Class 1A State Tournament. Tuesday's regional championship match will now be played at Crestwood High School in Cresco - instead of at Waverly, beginning at 7 p.m. against seventh-rated Tripoli. Leona M. O'Regan, 83, of Waukon died Saturday, October 21, 2017 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 28 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon with Fr. Mark Osterhaus officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's Hanover Cemetery, rural Waukon. Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. Friday, October 27 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, with a Rosary/Scripture service at 2:30 p.m.
Leona Mary O’Regan was born September 26, 1934 on the rural St. Lucas farm of her parents, Leo and Clara (Panos) Franzen. She graduated from St. Luke’s High School in St. Lucas as valedictorian of her class in 1952 and went on to receive LPN training at St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Rochester, MN.
John G. Tangen, 76, of Dorchester died Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Monday, October 23 at Big Canoe Lutheran Church with Pastor Kurt Bockoven officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery, both in rural Decorah.
John Gary Tangen was born September 15, 1941 in Waukon, the son of John Elder and Myrtle Aletta (Gavle) Tangen. He was baptized and confirmed at Big Canoe Lutheran Church in rural Decorah. John attended Hanover Country School and Waukon High School.
April 22, 1961, he married JoAnn Phyllis Johnson at Forest Mills United Methodist Church in rural Postville. They farmed together in Hanover Township in rural Waukon. John also worked at Iowa Turkey Products in Postville and in the meat department at Quillin's in Waukon.
Patricia C. Duwe, age 67, of Marion died Thursday, October 19, 2017 at St. Luke’s Hospice in-patient unit of complications due to cancer of the liver. Visitation will be held at Murdoch Funeral Home, 3855 Katz Drive in Marion Friday, November 3 from 4-7 p.m. The family will also greet friends Saturday, November 4 for one hour prior to the service which will begin at 11 a.m. at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, 3500 29th Avenue in Marion. Lunch will be served after the service in the fellowship hall. Burial will take place later in the day at Guttenberg City Cemetery.
Patricia Catherine Duwe was born January 29, 1950 in La Crosse, WI, the daughter of James and Juanita (Jack) Strub. She grew up in Lansing, where she graduated from Kee High School with the Class of 1968. After graduation, she attended business college in Cedar Rapids.
Belva Alicia (Hosch) Becker, 89, of New Albin died October 18, 2017 at Thornton Manor Nursing Home in Lansing. Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, October 20 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, New Albin with Rev. John Moser as the Celebrant. Inurnment followed at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, New Albin.
Belva was born February 18, 1928 to Peter and Inez (Woods) Hosch. She grew up in New Albin and was a graduate of New Albin High School in 1946.
Belva married Henry “Hank” Becker April 8, 1947 and they raised two children in New Albin. She worked at New Albin Savings Bank for many years. She was known throughout the area as a fine seamstress and sewed clothing for herself and doll clothes for her grandchildren. She crocheted many afghans and hundreds of kitchen towels. She was most proud of the 97 beautiful quilts she created over the years, each hand quilted with perfect stitching. Her family will also remember her homemade bread and famous caramel rolls.

The deadline to report acres of forage and pasture for 2018 is December 15, 2017. Late-file fees will be assessed for each farm not meeting the December 15 deadline. Make sure to get into the FSA office and certify any hay and pasture ground.
Myhre family farm recognized at Iowa State Fair ... Members of the Bonnie K. (Myhre) Williams family were present at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines August 17 to receive recognition of the family’s farm located near 236 Bear Creek Drive, Dorchester as a Century Farm. The 200-acre Myhre farm on Bear Creek Drive in Waterloo Township, Allamakee County, Iowa (formerly owned by Owen and Mildred Myhre and now owned by their daughters Bonnie and Laurie) reached a landmark this year: Having continuously been in the same family for 100 years, it earned the distinction of being named a century farm. Mildred Myhre of Spring Grove, MN, Bonnie (Myhre) and Bruce Williams of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Laurie (Myhre) Knoke of DeKalb, IL, attended a ceremony at the Iowa State Fair August 17, 2017 where they received a “Century Farm” marker from the Farm Bureau and a certificate from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship designating the property as a “2017 Century Farm”.
... that the handwriting seems to be on the wall in regard to the future of the Waterville attendance center of the Allamakee Community School District.
Not on the walls of that almost 100 year old building, but in the information publication put out by the district’s board for consideration prior to the board meeting in November and the December meeting to announce a decision.
It isn’t anyone’s fault if the decision is to close the school. It is a victim of changing population densities. The information shows an average of about 20 students per grade just 20 years ago to about ten projected for next year. Rural populations have declined everywhere as farmers have faced the same problem as many mom and pop businesses, either get big or get out.
Stigma is the greatest barrier to helping individuals with mental illness. Many people mistakenly think that people with mental illness are dangerous or that people with substance abuse disorders have a moral failing. In fact, the majority of people with mental illness pose no threat to others. And regardless of moral beliefs, addiction is a disease that impairs a person’s health, social function, and ability to control substance use.
This misunderstanding causes feelings of shame and fear among people with co-occurring disorders. Many people isolate themselves to avoid embarrassment, or deny that they need mental health treatment. Stigma in our society also prevents people in need from receiving help. Cultural rejection can prevent individuals with addiction from finding work, maintaining stable housing and providing for themselves.
One of the most serious threats to our youth may be lurking in your medicine cabinet. October 28 you have an opportunity to clean out those cabinets and reduce prescription drug and opioid abuse in our community.
The Police Department, along with the Drug Enforcement Agency, will be hosting a National Drug Take-Back Day for all community members to bring unused or expired pills and patches. This is a free event and completely confidential: No questions will be asked.
Allamakee County pick-up sites will be at the Waukon Police Department, Postville City Hall, Lansing City Hall and the Lansing Fire Department. The drop-off times will be October 28 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
