Veterans Memorial Hospital to offer free health tests and “Be The Match” sampling at Allamakee County Fair in Waukon July 20-22

Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) in Waukon will be offering free blood pressure checks and blood sugar tests each day at the Allamakee County Fair this year, as well as “Be the Match” stem cell sampling for everyone ages 18-40.

The “Be the Match” stem cell sampling is quick, easy, painless and can truly save a life. This is the same program that Robyn Roberts from Good Morning America endorses following her own successful bone marrow transplant match 10 years ago. A blood stem cell donation can be a cure for blood cancer, sickle cell and other deadly diseases. Many patients and their families are counting on drives like this to find their match. The process is simple and painless and will be available for all visitors to the fair.

Veterans Memorial Hospital will also be offering a photo booth and the Operation Game throughout the duration of the Allamakee County Fair to encourage youth to enter the medical field. Prizes will also be awarded.

Letter to the Editor: Submitted by Ann Hart

To the Editor:

I grew up in the Iowa of long ago. My father, a small farmer, was able to provide all four of his children with a college degree from one of our state universities.
In those “before times” when the wise leaders in Iowa provided nearly 80% of the funding to those schools, tuition was affordable for the masses. Our legislature currently only provides 30.5% of Regent funds. A two- or four-year degree allows for more choices and employment opportunities.

July 15: Spring Crop Reporting
July 14: ERP Phase 2
July 14: PARP

submitted by Eric Novey, Soil Conservationist, NRCS
Do you ever sit and wonder if the expense that goes into cover crops is worth it? You already know what they are costing you, but do you know what cover crops are giving back to you? With the cost of production continually increasing, thoughts on how to trim expenses take over.

Utilize, update State of Iowa’s free Hay and Straw Directory

The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship offers a free, searchable online directory to connect Iowa farmers who have hay or straw to sell with buyers who are interested in purchasing it.

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig is encouraging farmers or those with hay or straw to sell to update their listing at least once per year or as they have new inventories to offer. Organizations associated with promoting and marketing hay and straw can also access the free, online tool.

“Building markets for Iowa products is a priority for us, and the Hay and Straw Directory is a free, searchable online tool that connects Iowa sellers with both in-state and out-of-state buyers,” said Secretary Naig. “The Hay and Straw Directory is most effective and useful when it includes updated information, so I would encourage those with hay or straw to sell to make your updates now.”
