Raymond R. Shelton, age 81, of Waukon passed away Sunday, June 18, 2017. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, June 24 at the United Methodist Church in Lansing involving a visitation from 1-2:30 p.m. Interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Waukon.

Ray was born October 21, 1935 in Cedar Rapids. His parents were Raymond and Velma Shelton of Cedar Rapids. He entered the Army in 1959 until 1961, then he was in the Reserves until 1965.

Ray and the former Mona Steiber were married October 15, 1961 in Hiawatha. He retired from Deco in Decorah, then went to work seasonal at the Waukon City Park. Ray was an avid fisherman and loved his bowling.

Joyce A. Knox, 74, of Waukon died Thursday, June 15, 2017 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, WI. Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 20 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon with Pastor Samantha Houser officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.

Joyce Ann Knox was born December 12, 1942 in Waukon, the daughter of Melvin and Eleanor (Stock) Nolting. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon and graduated from Waukon High School.

October 8, 1966, Joyce married Eugene Knox at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon. At that time, Gene was in the military and the couple lived in North Carolina; once he was discharged, they moved to Cedar Rapids where they had a rental business until 1974, when they moved back to Waukon. They have resided in Waukon ever since. For 30 years, Joyce was the Allamakee County Deputy Treasurer; she enjoyed this job and often spoke of the many people she got to know through work.

H. L. “Larry” Hanson, 93, of Grand Island, NE died peacefully Sunday, June 11, 2017. Celebration of life memorial service was held Monday, July 19 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Grand Island, NE. Burial of ashes was in Grand Island City Cemetery with military honors provided by the U.S. Air Force and Grand Island Veterans’ Honor Guard.

Larry, the son of Almer and Ida (Larson) Hanson, was born August 12, 1923 in Waukon. He grew up on a farm in northeast Iowa, graduated from Waukon High School and attended North East Iowa Junior College. He took his first job at North American Aviation in California to help construct B24s and P51s.

The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors met in regular session Monday, June 12 to address a full agenda of items. Among those items were the Public Hearing for amendments to the ATV Ordinance LV, the signing of the revised Solutions Information Technology (IT) Services Agreement for Fiscal-Year 2018 and approval of the revised 28E agreement for the issuance of drivers licenses.

Veterans Memorial Hospital hosted its semi-annual Safety Day Camp Thursday, June 8 at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds in Waukon. This day camp drew a record crowd of 144 children ages seven to 14 from throughout Allamakee and Clayton counties for a day-long session on how to take responsibility for their own safety, respect parents’ safety rules and share safety tips with their family and friends.

According to Jeff Mitchell, EMS Coordinator and coordinator of this event, the camp was a huge success. “All of the children that attended really listened and watched all of the demonstrations and speakers at the event. We told them to remember all of the safety lessons they learned and follow them. We even told them to help teach others the safety rules they learned today, including their parents and siblings,” he said.

The Auxiliary of Veterans Memorial Hospital will be holding its monthly Euchre Marathon for all individuals of the community interested Thursday, June 15. Men and women are welcome to attend, even if not a member of the Auxiliary. The Euchre marathons are held by the Auxiliary the third Thursday of each month in the Senior Citizens Room at the Waukon Wellness Center.

The Auxiliary’s Euchre Marathons begin at 11:30 a.m. with dinner, if desired. Call Northland Agency on Aging at 877-838-8077 if choosing to eat dinner. Card playing will follow at 12:30 p.m. until approximately 2:30 p.m.

Anyone wishing to stay and play cards following the Senior Citizens meal is more than welcome to do so. The cost is $3 per person with all proceeds going toward the Auxiliary of Veterans Memorial Hospital. Prizes will be awarded.

The Veterans Memorial Hospital Diabetes Support Group will hold its next meeting Thursday, June 15 at 10 a.m. The meeting will be held at Veterans Memorial Hospital in the Large Conference Room, located on the lower level of the hospital in Waukon.

Veterans Memorial Hospital will begin the next Prepared Childbirth Education classes (formerly called Lamaze) Monday, July 10, and will continue those classes for two more consecutive Monday evenings, beginning at 6 p.m. in the Large Conference Room.

The Prepared Childbirth Education classes at Veterans Memorial Hospital are offered in three sessions that allow the expectant parents to choose which topics they wish to learn more on. They may choose to attend one, two or all three sessions. Session 1 covers labor, delivery and the postpartum period following delivery; Session 2 includes relaxation, breathing and pain management; and Session 3 covers infant care. Tours of the OB Department are available with each session as well.

The summer cookout season is officially underway in Iowa. Along with it comes the danger of under-cooked meat or meat that has been improperly prepared and the illnesses it can bring. Last year, over 1,000 Iowans got sick either directly or indirectly from food items that hadn’t been properly prepared.

One of the major dangers when meat is improperly prepared is E. coli 0157. Iowa State Epidemiologist Dr. Patricia Quinlisk said there is one simple rule that can cut down on the number of E. coli 0157 illnesses. “Cook all ground meat patties and poultry until the center is gray or brown. All juices running from the meat should be clear, with no trace of pink or cloudiness.”

Chuck and Lorna Duvel of rural Postville wish to announce the engagement and upcoming wedding of their daughter, Sabrina Duvel of Postville, to Nathan Piekarski of Lakeville, MN, son of Roger and Jill Piekarski of Lakeville, MN. The wedding is scheduled for September 2, 2017 in rural Calmar with an outdoor ceremony being planned.

The bride-to-be is a 2014 graduate of Waukon High School, a 2015 graduate of Kirkwood Community College’s Floral Design program and a 2016 graduate of Northeast Iowa Community College. She is currently employed at Menards in Apple Valley, MN.

The groom-to-be is a 2012 graduate of Lakeville North High School and is a Cavalry Scout with the Army National Guard. He is currently employed as an automotive technician at Poquet Auto in Lakeville, MN and will be graduating from Dakota County Technical College in the spring of 2018.
