Harlan T. Bakken, age 78, of Waukon died Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at Thornton Manor Nursing Center in Lansing after a long battle with cancer. Harlan’s wish was to donate his body to the Mayo Clinic Department of Anatomy in Rochester, MN for medical education and research. Memorial Services were held Monday, May 15 at Decorah Lutheran Church with Rev. David Sorenson officiating.
Harlan Trytten Bakken was born March 6, 1938 in Ridgeway to Lloyd and Edna (Trytten) Bakken. He attended Ridgeway Schools, Luther College and Iowa State University.
In 1966, he married Doris Schnuelle of Waukon. To that union, two children were born, Michelle and (Michael) Christian.
The 2017 Veterans Memorial Hospital Family Wellness Fair will be held this Wednesday, May 10 from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the hospital. This is the 20th annual event, which will feature some new attractions including a photo booth, a dunk tank. Chuck Long, former Iowa Hawkeye quarterback and pro football player who is now the Director of the Iowa Sports Foundation, will be at the fair to visit and sign autographs. The annual “Family Wellness Fair” will be held this Wednesday, May 10 from 3:30-6:30 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. The “Family Wellness Fair” is a community wide event offering families of all ages a night of entertainment and education about the local resources available to them, plus many free health testing opportunities. This fun-filled family event is free and open to all members of the community of any age.
This is the 20th annual event sponsored by Veterans Memorial Hospital and will include some special added attractions to celebrate this milestone. New this year, a photo booth will be available, plus a “Dunk Your Doctor” dunk tank will be on the grounds for a fun opportunity to raise funds for the Allamakee Relief Office and the local Veterans Quilts of Valor project.

The Auxiliary of Veterans Memorial Hospital will be holding its monthly Euchre Marathon for all individuals of the community interested Thursday, May 18. Men and women are welcome to attend, even if not an Auxiliary member. The Euchre marathons are held the third Thursday of each month at the Senior Citizens Room located at the Waukon Wellness Center.
The Auxiliary’s Euchre Marathons begin at 11:30 a.m. with dinner, if desired. Call Northland Agency on Aging at 877-838-8077 if choosing to eat dinner. Card playing will follow at 12:30 p.m. until approximately 2:30 p.m. Anyone wishing to stay and play cards following the Senior Citizens meal is more than welcome to do so. All proceeds from card playing going towards the Auxiliary of Veterans Memorial Hospital. Prizes will be awarded.
Anyone interested in attending, but preferring to play Bridge is also welcome to join in. It is asked that they come with their own table of four players, however.
The local Grief Support Group will hold its monthly meeting at Veterans Memorial Hospital Thursday, May 11 at 2 p.m. This informal meeting is open to anyone suffering from any type of loss, whether it be death, divorce, illness or some other grief.
Feel free to attend and bring a friend. This grief support group usually meets the second Wednesday of each month at Veterans Memorial Hospital, but has been moved to Thursday, May 11 due to the hospital’s wellness fair scheduled for May 10.
Veterans Memorial Hospital will be hosting the Safety Day Camp for children ages six to 14 Thursday, June 8 at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds in Waukon from 8:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. The camp is open to all children in the area. It is a true safety camp that instructs many areas of safety that address every child’s life.
During the camp, children participate in interactive activities that reinforce the importance of taking responsibility for their own safety, respecting parents’ safety rules and sharing safety tips with their family and friends. Hands-on demonstrations teach lifesaving first aid techniques and reveal the hidden hazards of children’s surroundings. Camp demonstrations also focus on farm hazards associated with many various safety topics.
The Veterans Memorial Hospital Diabetes Support Group will hold its next meeting Thursday, May 18 at 10 a.m. The meeting will be held at Veterans Memorial Hospital in the Large Conference Room, located on the lower level of the hospital.

Waukon High School’s Class of 1987 will be having a meeting to start planning its 30-year class reunion Wednesday, May 10 at Gus & Tony’s in Waukon, beginning at 7 p.m. All class members are welcome to attend.

The Waukon High School Class of 1982 35-Year Reunion has been scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, September 30 of this year at Empty Nest Winery, rural Waukon.

Bryce and Tiffany Koenig of Waukon announce the birth of their daughter, Everly Mary Koenig, born April 28, 2017 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. She weighed 7 lbs. 6 ozs. and measured 21 inches in length at the time of her birth. She joins siblings, Ellsy (4), Kase (3) and Krue (1).
Grandparents are Don and Mary Meyer of Waukon, and Doug and Rhonda Koenig of Frankville. Great-grandparents are Dennis and Jane Meyer of Waukon, Jean and the late Tom Lydon of Waukon, Harlen and the late Lorraine Koenig of Frankville, and the late Ted and Irene Feickert of Frankville.
