Iowa State University’s Farm Transition Conference is scheduled for February 9-10

Transitioning a farm to the next generation is one of the biggest challenges that farm owners and beginning farmers will face. The decisions made can affect families, finances and rural communities for decades into the future.

That’s why Iowa State University’s Farm Transitions Conference, slated for Feb. 9-10 in Ames, will bring together experts and experienced landowners from a wide range of backgrounds with the goal of improving the farm transition process.

Bankers, attorneys, tax professionals, mediators and family farmers will all be part of this year’s event, to be held at the Gateway Hotel. Attendees will hear from professionals who deal with all parts of farm transitions – those looking to exit farming, those looking to enter or expand, and those who simply want to review their existing succession plans to ensure they are current.

Letter to the Editor by Lowell L. Engle

To the Editor:

As we move into the New Year, I find myself giving thanks for living in Iowa and for having Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) and their entire staff serving us.

December 1 I suffered a serious accident while working in the woods with my son, Jonathon. We were working recovering firewood from a steep hillside on my farm and I was struck by a falling tree. The blow from the tree fractured my right femur and destroyed the artificial knee which had been implanted 21 years ago.

The Harpers Ferry Fire Department Rescue Squad brought me out of the woods and delivered me to VMH where they diagnosed the full extent of my injuries. Once the full extent of my injuries was known, the hospital staff began the search for anyplace to do the repairs required. It took all day to find a surgical team that does the type of work needed and that turned out to be University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

Letter to the Editor by Paul Pate Iowa Secretary of State

To the Editor:

There is a form of slavery taking place in Iowa right now. It’s called human trafficking, and it occurs when men, women or children are forced to perform labor services or sexual acts.

This horrific crime affects thousands of people across the U.S., and it can happen to anyone. The State of Iowa is taking steps to raise awareness about human trafficking and put an end to this danger, but we need your help.

January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month. This is an opportune time for Iowans to learn how to recognize the signs of human trafficking, stand with survivors, and inform them of available resources.

Indicator of high quality prairies ... For nearly 50 years, Raleigh and Joey Buckmaster of Lansing have carefully restored and preserved their property, protecting some of Iowa’s rarest natural and archaeological treasures. The results of that work are evident in the leadplant (Amorpha canescens pictured in the photo foreground above), which is an indicator of high quality prairies, that covers Capoli Bluff south of Lansing. What do you see when you look out over a landscape? Structural features like rivers and hills, or perhaps you notice the wildlife and plants that call it home?

What about history? Can you see the impacts of this land’s early and recent inhabitants, or how geologic events have shaped its valleys and ridges?

Lansing RAGBRAI Committee announces grant awards from historic profit

The Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) for 2022 ended its annual seven-day bicycle ride across the state in Lansing in late July this past summer. RAGBRAI is the oldest, largest and longest multi-day recreational bicycle touring event in the world.

The total profit realized from Lansing RAGBRAI 2022 was $113,298.92, which is the highest in the history of the annual event, according to RAGBRAI officials. Local organizers say the success of the event in Lansing was only possible because of the immense work and volunteer hours of hundreds of citizens, coming together to show Iowa pride and hospitality. Lansing RAGBRAI Executive Chair Ian Zahren would like to say to the people of the Lansing area and the RAGBRAI riders: “We are immensely grateful to all of you!”
