The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is seeking public comments on a draft Environmental Assessment, or EA, for its proposed Blackhawk Park bank stabilization and erosion protection project. The proposed project is upstream of Lock 9 on the Upper Mississippi River on the Wisconsin side, adjacent to Vernon County, WI.
The purpose of the project is to stabilize the bank and shoreline at five sites with seven work areas around Blackhawk Park that were affected by the flooding events in spring 2023. Construction would occur in summer 2025. There will be temporary effects to recreational activities in the immediate area during construction, which will last several weeks.
Applications are being accepted for Allamakee County Dairy Princess until this Friday, February 28. Those applications can be found online at www.extension.iastate.edu/allamakee.
Dairy Princess candidates must live in Allamakee County. She and/or her parents must either own dairy cattle and have cattle engaged in milk production, be actively employed in a dairy operation or have an invested interest in the Dairy Industry. Candidates must be between the ages of 16 and 22, and be at least a junior in high school and unmarried.

The annual Pops Concert will feature a night filled with music and student performances at the Waukon Middle School Gym this Friday, February 28, beginning at 7 p.m. The Allamakee Music Boosters invite the community to enjoy a diverse array of musical talent showcased by local students.

Dylan Bieber of Waukon has earned the National Junior Angus Association’s (NJAA) Silver Award, according to Caitlyn Brandt, events and junior activities director of the American Angus Association® in Saint Joseph, MO. Bieber is the 15-year-old son of Ed and Amy Bieber of Waukon and attends Allamakee Community Schools. He is a member of the NJAA and the Iowa Junior Angus Association.
Bieber has participated in local, state and national shows. At the National Junior Angus Show, Bieber participated in the livestock judging, quiz bowl, Skill-A-Thon and poster contests. He was also a participant in the 2023 mentoring program. In 2024 Bieber participated in the Leaders Engaged in Angus Development Conference. He has submitted DNA samples for Genomic Profile Testing through Angus Genetics Inc. and consigned cattle to the Iowa Beef Expo Angus Sale.
The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors met in regular session Monday, February 24 to address a full agenda of matters including the consideration of the Northeast Iowa Regional Housing Trust Fund contribution request, the presentation of the Compensation Board recommendation for Fiscal Year 2026 (FY26) Elected Official salaries, and the consideration of a 28E Cooperative Agreement relating to the Volney Bridge replacement project. The meeting was called to order by Board of Supervisors Chairperson Dan Byrnes with Supervisors Tom Clark and Dennis Keatley present.
The Allamakee Community School District (ACSD) school board met for it regular monthly board meeting Tuesday, February 18 (due to the Presidents’ Day holiday observed on the board’s regular Monday meeting day). Under the consent agenda, the board approved the hiring of the following personnel: Jon Snitker and Dillon Daniel as volunteer track coaches; Justin Thrailkill as High School Special Education Teacher; and Kevin Johnson as High School Alternative Education/Social Studies Teacher.

Building meaningful connections can occur in a variety of ways. Technology has advanced peoples’ ability to connect with one another across a variety of virtual platforms, and when used appropriately, adds value to the learning environment. However, it is vital to the developmental health and growth of students that the district provides opportunities for students to connect with peers and other members of their school community in-person whenever possible. In-person learning and interactions teach vital life and social skills that students will need for their continued success in the community.

At its Monday, February 17 regular meeting, the Lansing City Council reviewed the formal resolution for the Platt, North, and 4th Street Improvements Project, addressing contract terms and performance bond requirements. Legal and compliance checks were completed, ensuring the project met municipal standards. The resolution formalizes the contract agreement and performance bond requirements for the upcoming street improvement work on Platt, North, and 4th Streets.
However, deliberations revealed that some required bid bonds had not yet arrived, prompting a temporary postponement. Due to that missing element, the approval of the resolution had to be tabled.
Lansing VFW Auxiliary #5981 is hosting its Annual National Vietnam Veterans Day Soup & Sandwich Supper Saturday, March 29 from 3-7 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church Hall located at 648 Main Street, Lansing. A Ceremony of Gratitude, to commemorate National Vietnam Veterans Day and to honor all Veterans, will begin at 5 p.m.
