The Veterans Memorial Health Care Foundation’s 33rd Annual Benefit Golf Tournament will be held Monday, June 22, at the Waukon Golf and Country Club beginning with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.

Teams of three will play 18 holes of golf. Breakfast rolls, lunch, dinner and prizes for everyone will all be provided for the donation of $100 per person or $300 per team. Only a few spots remain for teams to sign-up.

As temperatures increase this summer, stay informed and prepared for extreme heat conditions. Heat-related illnesses occur when a person’s body temperature rises faster than it can cool itself down. Many factors can increase body temperature including dehydration, living and working in spaces without air conditioning and intense physical activity.  Knowing what actions to take if experiencing heat-related illness is essential during extreme heat. 

The following outlines those who are most affected by heat-related illness:
• People who work outside, athletes and children.
• Infants, young kids and pets.
• Adults ages 60 and older.
• People without air-conditioned houses, cars and work places.
• People with chronic health conditions.
• People with reduced mobility and limited access to transportation.
• Pregnant, expectant mothers.

As the year reaches its midpoint, it’s a good time to check in with yourself. How are you really feeling? A mid-year mental health check-in can help older adults pause, reflect, and take steps toward emotional well-being.

Veterans Memorial Hospital’s Senior Life Solutions Program provides support for older adults facing depression, anxiety, grief, and life transitions. If someone you know is struggling, reaching out can make a difference.

Veterans Memorial Hospital’s Senior Life Solutions Program offers compassionate, outpatient group therapy designed to help older adults feel understood, supported, and connected. Anyone age 65 and older and needs support is encouraged to reach out by calling 563-568-5560 or visit www.veteransmemorialhospital.com.

Free sports physicals will be offered at the Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH)Clinic-Waukon in July for all junior high and high school students who need the physical for participating in school sporting events. These will be held at the Veterans Memorial Hospital Waukon Clinic on the following dates and times:

• Wednesday, July 8 5:30-8:30 p.m.
• Wednesday, July 22 5:30-8:30 p.m.
 
These clinics will include all necessary documentation, including a concussion screening, for participation in all school activities.  Physicals are scheduled in 1-hour segments. The clinic staff will not be administering vaccines during this time. If those are needed for students, feel free to call the clinic at 563-568-5530 to schedule an appointment.

An open house in honor of Frank Lyons’ 90th birthday is scheduled for Saturday, June 20 from 1-3 p.m. at the Farm Bureau Building, 14 First Avenue NE, Waukon. No gifts are requested.

The family of Jackie and Neil Everett announces the couple’s 65th wedding anniversary June 17. Sixty-five years ago, in 1961, Jacqueline Lula Jenkins wed Neil Roger Everett at the United Methodist Church on 5th and Center Streets in Lansing. Their decades-long love story actually began in Colorado, all thanks to a coin flip.

While out skiing with two friends, one of Neil’s companions had to leave early to meet his girlfriend. The girlfriend had requested a blind date for her friend, Jackie. Because both young men wanted to keep skiing, they flipped a coin to decide who would go. Neil “lost” the toss and left the slopes. While he might have thought he lost the coin flip at the time, he ultimately won the date of a lifetime.

Glenn and Terri (Snitker) Krueger of Waukon are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. The couple married June 18, 1966 at the Presbyterian Church in Rossville.

Their family includes children Kari Beth Krueger-Stoffel (Bill) of Campbellsport, WI, Kris Krueger (Sarah) of Waukon and Kasha Larson of Waukon, in addition to grandchildren Ethan, Sawyer, Kiana, Remig and Zenan Krueger, Shayden, Kaylie, Kolton and Klinton Stoffel, and Jamiah and Iyanna Larson.

The Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) Diabetes Support Group will not hold a regular meeting in June this month. They will meet again July 16.

Anita Theresa Clauson, age 72, of Spring Grove, MN, passed away Friday, June 12, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Funeral services will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Caledonia, MN Friday, June 26, at 11 a.m. A luncheon will follow in the church hall. Interment of Anita’s ashes will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Dorchester, and will follow the luncheon.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or to the family, with a designation to be decided. McCormick Funeral Home, Caledonia, MN is assisting the family.

Anita was born to Lawrence and Monica Schulte August 1, 1953, and graduated from Waukon High School in 1971. She worked at Northern Engraving until her retirement.

Gary L. Johanningmeier, 82, of rural Waukon died peacefully, surrounded by many members of his family, Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. He died of a brain hemorrhage after a recent stroke.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 26 at 11 a.m. at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church with Pastor Abraham Faugstad officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, both in rural Waterville. Friends may greet the family from 9 a.m. until time of services at the church Friday.

Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church.

Gary Lee Johanningmeier was born June 12, 1943, in Monona, the son of Lloyd and Ulina (Thein) Johanningmeier. He was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Monona, and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elkport.
