Northeast Iowa RC&D has been announced as one of three members of an elite place-based flood prevention model made possible through the American Flood Coalition (AFC). The RC&D along with the two other awardees, The Coalition for Environment, Equality, and Resilience in Harris County Texas, and the Wetlands Watch in Norfolk, Virginia, was recognized for its efforts in providing scalable solutions to help prevent the devastation from flooding experienced around the US. As part of this recognition, AFC will work with each of these organizations over the next year to test their strategies for flood reduction in order to document workable solutions that can be adopted throughout the US and inform national policy development.
This new publication provides a basic understanding of the major crops grown in Iowa
Growing successful field crops is a science, one that is learned and improved upon with years of experience. But sometimes it just makes sense to start with the basics. That’s the approach of a new publication from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach called the Field Crop Production Handbook.
This 144-page handbook provides a general overview of the essential aspects of producing field crops in Iowa. It focuses on the basics of crop establishment, but also on care and harvest, as well as the impacts on soil, water and wildlife.
“The handbook is useful for people who are new to agriculture or may be joining the family farm and want to get reacquainted with some of the basics of crop production,” said Erin Hodgson, professor and extension specialist in entomology at Iowa State University.

“Up, Up and Away with Ed Asner Day” ... Sunday, September 13 was “Up, Up and Away with Ed Asner Day” during the first annual Spring Grove International Film Festival held throughout that weekend and created by Waukon resident Katie O’Regan. Part of those festivities included a parade through the streets of Spring Grove, MN, and one of the entries in that parade was a float themed after the animated motion picture “Up,” in which Ed Asner played the voice role of main character Carl Fredricksen. Asner is pictured at right in the front dressed as Fredricksen, with O’Regan at left in the front row and several other locals also dressed as characters from the “Up” movie, which was also featured in a public showing during the film festival event. The classic Hollywood trope - parodied through the years by the phrase, Hey, kids; let’s put on a show! - of pulling together some talented people and, on a shoestring budget, producing a show in benefit of a cause, has its roots in the 1939 film starring Andy Rooney and Judy Garland, “Babes in Arms.”
The Allamakee County Freedom Rock was unveiled in a ceremony at the Waukon City Park Friday, September 11 as a tribute to the many Veterans of the local community both past and present. Fundraising is currently underway to cover the cost of the Freedom Rock and future costs for landscaping and further development of the Freedom Rock location.
Waukon State Bank recently contributed $5,000 to the Allamakee County Freedom Rock project. Saturday, September 19 at approximately 4:29 p.m. the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department in Wisconsin was notified of a motorcycle accident with injuries on State Hwy. 35 at its intersection with Old Hwy. 35 (South Mill Park Drive) in Freeman Township, about a quarter-mile south of De Soto, WI.
According to a report issued by the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department, Richard A. Baumgartner, age 62, of Waukon was traveling southbound on Old Hwy. 35 operating a 2011 Harley Davidson Trike motorcycle and was approaching the intersection with State Hwy. 35. The Baumgartner cycle failed to get stopped at the stop sign, struck the curb/left shoulder of the highway, rolled twice and ejected Baumgartner from the cycle onto the southbound lane of State Hwy. 35. The motorcycle came to rest on the westside shoulder of State Hwy. 35.
The Allamakee Community School District Board of Directors met Monday evening, September 21 for its regular monthly board meeting. Under the consent agenda, the board approved the following personnel items: After School Programming staff, Kirby Jones as a middle school paraprofessional, Cinnamon Blood as a substitute bus driver, and Jaelyn Strong as a West Elementary paraprofessional.
The board approved a Haunted Park clean-up for the Waukon High School Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter Sunday, October 25, as well as Youth Sports Foundation (YSF) Sunday usage of the high school football field October 11 and 18. Two open enrollments for students enrolling out of the district were approved. An agreement with TASC Transition Service was approved, as was the Keystone Office Rental agreement.
The regular meeting of the Lansing City Council was held Monday, September 21. The discussion centered around the consent agenda and the Street Department report.
The consent agenda consisted of council meeting minutes from September 8. A motion was made and seconded with minimal discussion to approve the consent agenda.
Dead trees were taken down at the city swimming pool, and the pool is being winterized now that the summer season is over. There is a low amount of water that has been left in the pool to help with keeping the cement structure stabilized. A motion was made and seconded to approve the Street Department report.
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds visited Allamakee County Friday, September 18 as part of her annual 99-county tour, making a couple stops in Waukon. Gov. Reynolds began her Waukon visit at the Iron Ridge Church, the site of a food distribution event that day through the USDA’s Farms to Families Program. Reynolds next visited the S&D Café in downtown Waukon to meet with and listen to concerns from members of the public, being pictured above talking with S&D Café owner Sandy Halverson. Reynolds said that her 99-county tour is focusing on meeting with business owners to hear the challenges facing them, including the impact of COVID-19 mitigation efforts. Reynolds discussed grants available to businesses through the Iowa Economic Development Authority, which have helped to finance or bridge the gap while being shutdown.
The Allamakee County 4-H Youth Development Committee is proud to recognize Dan and Jane Sivesind of Waukon as the 2020 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame inductees from Allamakee County. The 2020 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame inductees were inducted this year by a virtual ceremony that can be viewed online at the Iowa 4-H Foundations website at https://www.iowa4hfoundation.org.
The Sivesinds have been active supporters of the Allamakee County 4-H program for over 30 years. Their family has competed in numerous county fairs, regional shows, as well as state shows over the years. Instilling the value of 4-H in their children, they have continued the family tradition of giving back to the 4-H community.
