Iowa 4-H Foundation has scholarships for current or former 4-H members

The Iowa 4-H Foundation has announced applications are now available for its 4-H scholarship program. Over 100 scholarship opportunities valued at over $110,000 will be awarded.

The various scholarship awards range in amounts from $500 to $10,000. Some of the scholarships are open to students pursuing any field of study, while others are open to students pursuing more specific degrees in agriculture, food and nutrition, ag business, animal science and journalism.

Former and current Iowa 4-H members are eligible to apply for 4-H scholarships if they meet individual scholarship requirements, as determined by the scholarship donors. Applicants must enroll as a full-time student to receive scholarship awards.

Adopt a Pot for the holiday season ...

The flower pots along Main Street in Lansing have transitioned to winter decorations, but there’s plenty of room for personalization. Main Street Lansing would like to invite residents, business owners or organizations to “Adopt a Pot” and decorate it as festively as they desire. Lansing Fire Department responds to pair of rural blazes last Wednesday

The Lansing Fire Department experienced a very busy Wednesday last week, being paged to a pair of fire calls Wednesday, December 4 in the rural area west of Lansing in the Churchtown area along State Highway 9. No injuries were reported in either blaze, and both are still under investigation as to their cause and the total amount of loss.

Final week to take part in “Main Street Madness” promotion sponsored by Main Street Lansing

“Main Street Madness”, Lansing Main Street’s holiday punch card shopping promotion, is anticipating a record-breaking year with even more prizes. This year’s “Madness” runs through December 14. Last year, $220,100 was spent in downtown Lansing by “Main Street Madness” punch card promotion participants.

To participate, look for a participating merchant poster and pick up a free punch card. The cards can then be validated with either punches or stamps in five-dollar increments for purchases made between November 11 and December 14. Once a card is full ($100 in purchases), turn it in and start another. Shoppers are welcome to complete as many cards as they can.

Completed cards will then be entered into a drawing for one of four Lansing Downtown Dollar prizes this year of $200, $150, $100 and $75. Gift cards from local businesses will also be awarded.

Waukon girls basketball team splits back-to-back games of weekend basketball, opens NEIC schedule with 47-32 home win over New Hampton but suffers first loss to Hudson

Back-to-back games within less than 24 hours of one another resulted in the Waukon girls basketball team’s first loss of the season, as the hoop Tribe played to a split of those two contests in its only competition on the schedule late this past week. The Lady Indians first opened their Northeast Iowa Conference and home schedules with a 47-32 handling of New Hampton at home Friday, December 6 before suffering this season’s first loss, 44-35, to Hudson in a day-long basketball showcase hosted by Upper Iowa University in Fayette Saturday, December 7.

Kee girls basketball team sandwiches season’s first loss, 73-37 to Turkey Valley, in between pair of victories, 60-28 over Postville and 55-34 over Leroy-Ostrander

The Kee girls basketball team worked through a busy three-game schedule this past week, putting two of those three games in the win column, one on each side of the Lady Hawks’ first loss of the young season. The Kee hoopsters began the week with a 60-28 home win over Postville Tuesday, December 3 before consecutive nights of weekend basketball saw the Hawks tripped up for the first time this season, 73-37 at home to undefeated Turkey Valley, but then bounce back with a 55-34 win over Leroy-Ostrander, MN in the annual Border Battle hosted by Luther College in Decorah Saturday, December 7.

Kee boys basketball team opens season with pair of UIC home losses to Postville, Turkey Valley before holding on for 55-52 win over Mabel-Canton

The Kee boys basketball team got its 2019-2020 campaign underway with a very busy week, playing three games over the course of just five days. The Hawks saved their best for last in battling through that early-season barrage of competition, posting their first victory of the young season in a 55-52 triumph over Mabel-Canton, MN in the annual Border Battle hosted by Luther College in Decorah Saturday, December 7. Prior to that victory, Kee opened its season with a 54-40 loss at home to Postville Tuesday, December 3 before also falling to Turkey Valley at home, 58-29, Friday, December 6.

Opening the season with a 1-2 overall record, 0-2 in Upper Iowa Conference play, the Hawks were next scheduled to play at Clayton Ridge Tuesday, December 10 before hosting North Crawford, WI Thursday, December 12. They will then wrap up the pre-holiday portion of their schedule with two more home contests, hosting Central Elkader Tuesday, December 17 and then MFL/MarMac Friday, December 20.

Waukon football team plays to near perfection during 2019 campaign with 12-1 season that results in Class 2A State Runner-Up finish

The 2019 Waukon football season saw a golden opportunity end up with a silver lining as the grid Tribe was on course for a perfect championship season but ended up as Class 2A’s State Runner-Up with a 12-1 season record. Playing to the program’s first undefeated regular season since the 1950s, the Indians began their sixth Class 2A State Play-Off journey in the past eight seasons and made their way to the season-climactic State Championship game for the third time in the past seven seasons, but had their first-ever perfect season and two-time championship hopes dashed by a team from OABCIG (Odebolt-Arthur-Battle Creek-Ida Grove) that seemed to surprise everyone this season with its own perfect campaign that culminated in a successful outcome in the program’s first-ever State Championship game appearance.

Patricia Wild

Patricia “Patti” Wild, 75, of Lansing died Saturday, November 30, 2019 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, WI. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, December 6 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing. Inurnment was at Gethsemane Cemetery.

Patricia Lou, the daughter of Milton George and Genevieve (Guider) Wild, was born September 11, 1944 in Waukon. She graduated from St. George High School in Lansing and earned her dietary certification later in life.

Patti owned and operated the Riv Aire in Lansing for many years, she worked for Meals on Wheels in Lansing, and was the Dietary Manager at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon for 16 years.

Carolyn Hunstad

Carolyn Eileen (Mullins) Hunstad, 82, of Waukon, formerly of various locations throughout the Twin Cities, MN, died Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at Good Samaritan Society in Waukon. Memorial services will be held Friday, January 3, 2020 at 1 p.m. at Christ Presbyterian Church in Edina, MN. Friends may greet the family one hour before and then following services at the church. The burial services for both Carolyn and her husband, Donald, will be with immediate family at a later date at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Preston, MN. Memorials will be donated to: Nickel Open Fund.

Carolyn Eileen Mullins was born December 2, 1937 in Robinson, IL, the daughter of Vernon and Faye Mullins. She graduated from Washburn High School in South Minneapolis, MN. Carolyn then attended The Minneapolis Business College where she met her husband, Donald J. Hunstad. November 10, 1956, Carolyn married Don at Lake Harriet Christian Church in Minneapolis, MN.
