Birth announcement: Webb

Cody and Jodi Webb of Decorah announce the birth of their son, Duke Cody Webb, born February 17, 2019 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. He weighed 7 lbs. 13 ozs. and measured 22 inches in length at the time of his birth. He joins a brother, Walden (22 months). Grandparents are Mark and Jane Webb of Decorah, Jane Hendricks and Ric Hillers of Manchester and Dean and Peg Hendricks of Oelwein.

Area entities earn awards for excellence at this year’s Iowa Tourism Conference


Northeast Iowa Tourism Association awarded at Iowa Tourism Conference ... Northeast Iowa Tourism Association, a seven-county regional marketing group with a mission of promoting tourism in northeast Iowa, was recognized with an award for Outstanding Social Media Execution (Rural) at the 2019 Iowa Tourism Conference hosted by the Iowa Tourism Office and the Travel Federation of Iowa in Altoona February 6-8. Northeast Iowa Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) received an award for Outstanding Niche Marketing Initiative (Rural) for its Northeast Iowa Trout Fishing Guides at the 2019 Iowa Tourism Conference hosted by the Iowa Tourism Office and the Travel Federation of Iowa in Altoona February 6-8. A pair of area entities serving northeast Iowa received awards for their efforts in promoting tourism at the 2019 Iowa Tourism Conference hosted by the Iowa Tourism Office and the Travel Federation of Iowa in Altoona February 6-8. Northeast Iowa Tourism Association and Northeast Iowa Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) each received awards in their respective rural divisions of promoting aspects of Iowa tourism.

Northeast Iowa Tourism Association, a seven-county regional marketing group with a mission of promoting tourism in northeast Iowa, was recognized with an award for Outstanding Social Media Execution (Rural). Northeast Iowa Tourism Association has members representing Allamakee, Buchanan, Chickasaw, Clayton, Fayette, Howard and Winneshiek Counties.

Northeast Iowa Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) also received an award for Outstanding Niche Marketing Initiative (Rural) for its Northeast Iowa Trout Fishing Guides.

Country music group Parmalee announced as headlining grandstand act for Allamakee County Fair

The Allamakee County Fair Board has announced that the country music group Parmalee will be its headlining act for the grandstand performances at the 2019 Allamakee County Fair this summer. Parmalee will take to the stage Friday evening, July 19 of this year’s fair, with the opening act and start time of that musical performance yet to be announced. Additional information about other grandstand attractions and events at the Allamakee County Fair will be released when available.

Formed in 2001, the band broke on to the major country music scene with its first number-one hit “Carolina” in 2013. Two more singles, “Close Your Eyes” and “Already Callin’ You Mine,” also made it into the top 10 of some Billboard charts.

Late Monday accident claims rural Lansing man

Monday, February 18 at approximately 11:14 p.m., the Allamakee County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a single-vehicle accident at the intersection of Schweinfurth Road and Village Creek Road in rural Allamakee County, approximately eight miles northeast of Waukon.

According to an accident report from the Allamakee County Sheriff’s Office, a car driven by Marty Roger Melcher, age 52, of rural Lansing was traveling westbound on Schweinfurth Road. The vehicle failed to stop at the intersection and traveled across Village Creek Road, entering the ditch and striking a tree. Melcher was transported to Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon where he was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the accident.

The accident remains under investigation by the Allamakee County Sheriff’s Office. Assisting at the scene was the Veterans Memorial Hospital Ambulance Service and the Waukon Fire Department.

Allie Bieber crowned 2019 Iowa Angus Princess


Crowned Iowa Angus Princess ... Allie Bieber, daughter of Ed and Amy Bieber of Waukon, was crowned the 2019 Iowa Angus Princess at the Iowa Angus Association Annual Banquet held during the Iowa Beef Expo February 13. Bieber will now spend the next year promoting the Angus beef industry across the state of Iowa and will also represent Iowa at the National Junior Angus Show to be held in Louisville, KY in July of this year. Allie Bieber, daughter of Ed and Amy Bieber of Waukon and a sophomore at Waukon High School, was crowned the 2019 Iowa Angus Princess at the Iowa Angus Association Annual Banquet held during the Iowa Beef Expo in Des Moines Wednesday, February 13. As a fifth generation Angus producer, Bieber said she is honored to be able to represent the breed and the industry in this capacity.

The application process through the Iowa Angus Association involved filling out an application form and writing an essay describing her involvement in the Angus industry, both as an individual and within a family capacity, as well as how she would intend to further promote the Angus breed. She was then contacted for a telephone interview and later received another call congratulating her and asking her to attend the Iowa Beef Expo.

Nominated for Best Actor in a Musical ...

Waukon resident Cameron Berges was recently nominated for a “Best Actor in a Musical” award from the Iowa Community Theatre Association for his role in the Elkader Opera House Players Fall 2018 production of “Mary Poppins.” Performing in his first Opera House Players production, Berges played the role of chimney sweep, Bert (pictured above). The Opera House Players were nominated for 13 awards this year for two productions, “Mary Poppins” and “A Comedy of Tenors”, the most nominations for a single theatre group for 2018. The 2018 Outstanding Awards of Excellence winners will be announced March 30 at the Iowa Community Theatre Association (ICTA) Gala held during the ICTA Festival scheduled for March 28-31 in Newton. Supervisors approve letter to Iowa Legislature in opposition to House File 487 regarding bypassing local control over siting communications towers

The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors met in regular session Monday, February 25. There was no Public Comment during that scheduled portion of the meeting.

The first agenda item involved the consideration of signing a letter to the Iowa Legislature regarding HSB 155, now known as House File 487. Allamakee County Emergency Management Coordinator Corey Snitker indicated that the Iowa State Association of Counties (ISAC) and Emergency Management are opposed to the legislation affecting 47 Iowa counties with populations below 15,000.

Waukon Middle School to perform “30 Horrible Catastrophes of Middle School” this Friday ...

The Waukon Middle School will be performing its annual spring play this Friday, March 1 at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium, with doors opening at 6 p.m. This year’s play is “30 Horrible Catastrophes of Middle School” by Kamron Klitgaard/Brooklyn Publishers. Admission can be paid at the door the night of the performance. Thirty-plus Waukon Middle School students from sixth, seventh and eighth grades (some of whom are pictured above) have been working through all the winter weather obstacles to keep this year’s play scheduled. All are invited for a night of comedy.

Waukon Middle School 10th hour program conducting community service project ...

Waukon Middle School students in the 10th hour afterschool program have been involved in a community service project this semester. The students have been constructing fleece blankets for distribution to the Allamakee County Public Safety Departments. Waukon Police Officer Paul Wagner is pictured above receiving blankets in mid-February from some of those Waukon Middle School students. These blankets will be distributed for use in sheriff, police and highway patrol vehicles. The officers will be able to use the blankets to provide comfort to any accident or injured victims. The students plan to construct more blankets to distribute to the fire department. The 10th hour afterschool program welcomes any recommendations for assisting any other community service program.
