The Auxiliary of Veterans Memorial Hospital together with Elliott Jewelers of Waukon will be hosting its ninth annual Women’s Health Day wellness event and luncheon Tuesday, September 24 at the Waukon Banquet Center. All ages are invited to attend this educational event, beginning at 11 a.m. with a wellness fair offering a variety of free health tests and information, and a salad luncheon and program held from Noon to 1 p.m.
Tickets are available at Veterans Memorial Hospital and Elliott Jewelers. Tickets will also be available at the door. The proceeds from this event will be used to purchase new flat screen TVs for the patient rooms at the hospital.
The theme for this year’s event is “Bank On Your Good Health.” Featured speakers for the Women’s Health Day program will include Dr. Greg Valkosky, Podiatrist with the Gundersen Health System, who will teach those attending how to take the best possible care of their feet. Jill Fleming, Registered and Licensed Dietitian with Veterans Memorial Hospital and well known author and national speaker, will speak on smoothies, squeezies and stress. She will be demonstrating how to make your own smoothies and explaining the numerous benefits, informing everyone on squeezies, which are an easy and effective way of toning, and teaching everyone stress reduction exercises.
The doors will open for this event at 11 a.m., with the luncheon and program speakers beginning at Noon. Those able to take a longer lunch break may enjoy the free health testing and vendors available from 11 a.m. to Noon and again following the luncheon program. To honor one-hour lunch breaks, participants are also invited to attend just the program and luncheon, which will be held to just one hour.
Free wellness testing will include blood pressure testing, blood sugar testing, mini-stress tests, body mass index testing, fitness assessments, waist circumference, oxygen saturation testing and carbon monoxide testing. Hands-Only CPR demonstrations with a chance to practice will also be offered. Cholesterol testing will be available for a charge. Free chair massages and reflexology (foot massages) will be offered, plus information on breast cancer awareness, nutrition, smoking cessation, incontinence therapy, surgery services and many other health issues will be available. Flu shots will also be offered by VMH Community and Home Care for a fee, based on availability.
This year at the Women’s Health Day, the Auxiliary will be raffling off a large (100” x 122”) quilt in bright blue and pink tones with hand-embroidered blocks all completed by members of the Auxiliary of VMH. The quilt was pieced, machine-quilted and finished by Mary Kay Winke, Carolyn Clark and Linda Siegrist. Tickets for the raffle are on sale now at Veterans Memorial Hospital and will also be available at the Women’s Health Day event, with the drawing held that day at the end of the event.
The cost of the Women’s Health Day event is $15 per person. For that fee, all those attending will receive a goodie bag filled with coupons, samples, and general health information, in addition to the luncheon, health testing and program. Every person purchasing a ticket will be entered into a drawing for a Ladies’ circular fashion earring and pendant set made of sterling silver enhanced with an 18 karat yellow gold design and genuine round Peridot gems. The sterling silver rolo style neck chain is 17 inches long and has a lobster claw clasp (retail value $468), compliments of Elliott Jewelers of Waukon. In addition, many more door prizes will be given away at the event.
