State Legislature reaches agreement to keep Luster Heights open for another year

A bi-partisan agreement reached by Iowa lawmakers last week will keep the Luster Heights correctional facility open next year. State Rep. Patti Ruff has been working on the issue since session began after the Governor proposed closing the facility.
“The bi-partisan compromise is great news for our community and our friends and neighbors who work at Luster Heights,” said Ruff. “My sincere thanks to all the people who contacted legislators and helped keep Luster Heights open.”
Senate File 447 is the Justice Systems budget and includes funding for public safety and the Iowa Department of Corrections (DOC). Lawmakers added language that requires the DOC to keep Luster Heights open next year. The compromise was approved by both the House and Senate last Wednesday.
While the Legislature made clear Luster Heights is to remain open, there is a small chance the Governor could still try to close the facility. Concerned citizens should call Governor Branstad at 515-281-5211 and urge him to keep Luster Heights open next year.
