Letter to the Standard’s Editor

To the Editor:

It seems like every time we read the paper some foundation or organization is asking the supervisors for donations. $30,000 here and $14,000 there, so the funds would be matched by grants. To me grants are also tax payers’ money.

In regard to the NICC satellite center, a few years back it was in the paper that the county had a six million dollar surplus. Now, a year or maybe two years ago, it was in the paper that the six million was on interest at somewhere around one percent. So, where is the six million?

Now, the first thing that was mentioned by the supervisors was to raise the tax levy to come up with the $625,000.

Now, just in this neck of the woods, there are four new houses going up. So revenue should be increasing.

Now the county is proposing to use General Basic Fund ending fund balance, $293,000 was gone in a matter of seconds. If the county would invest some of the General Basic Fund ending fund balance, then maybe it would have some funds for a rainy day.

Raising the tax levy is not the answer. If it is, I'd hate to be around when our great-grandkids start paying.
