JV girls compile 16-4 record on hardcourt

Waukon’s junior varsity girls basketball squad just completed a fine season. The Indians registered a 16-4 record overall. They were 9-3 in Northeast Iowa Conference play.

JV coach Dave Schoeberlein saw several good qualities in his charges, however he was most proud of the Tribe’s teamwork.“The girls had a really good season, I was really proud of the way that the girls came together as a team. The girls played very hard the whole season. We also showed a lot of improvement over the whole season. I hope that they learned skills and attitudes that will help them at the next level and in their other activities.”

With the varsity Indians experiencing great success, the junior varsity corps had the opportunity to play in front of some sizeable crowds. “We has some great experiences playing in front of some packed houses. Not many JV teams get that kind of opportunity and experience,” Schoeberlein said. “I want to thank the girls and the fans for all their positive support the whole season.”

Statistically, Lynsey Mellick led the Indians with 203 points. Also finishing in triple figures were Leanna Hammel (134), Alex Langland (132), and Karisa Sickels (120).

On the glass, Sickels snagged 73 rebounds to lead the Tribe while Hammel reeled in 67. Betsy Farley, Hannah Jones, and Jenny Hover all finished with 51 boards.

Langland paced Waukon with 100 steals and 40 assists.

Hammel wrapped up a fine all-around effort with 93 steals, 29 assists, and a team-leading four blocks.

Mellick was also a key part of the defense with 92 steals.

Sickels finished with 20 assists and Christie Dundee was second on the team with a trio of blocked shots.
