Sophomore boys basketball team ends year with 16-5 mark

The sophomore boys basketball squad rounded out the season with two wins in their final three contests. The Indians bashed Central 62-30 before falling to Charles City by a 57-41 final. Fortunately, the Indians recovered to win their final game, a 54-42 road win over Decorah.

For the year, Waukon was 16-5 overall and 9-3 in Northeast Iowa Conference play.

Waukon trounced Central Tuesday, Feb. 15, posting a 62-30 nonconference win on the Warriors’ home court.

By the half, Waukon already held a 37-17 lead. The Indians outscored their hosts 25-13 through the third and fourth quarters to post the victory.

Andrew Snitker led the Tribe with nine points and four blocks.

Shawn Bjerke chipped in eight points, two assists, and led the Indians with four boards.

Tyler Oder also reeled in four rebounds and Cody Snitker had three assists.

On the defensive end, Derek Snitker had three steals and Devan Kuehn picked up two.

Waukon had trouble with the NEIC’s other orange and black team Friday, Feb. 18. The Comets outscored the Indians by a 57-41 margin.

Competition was close after two frames as the Indians were down only five, 26-21, at the half. Charles City pulled away in the second half, posting 31 points to the Tribe’s 20 to come up with the win.

Vaughn Gesing’s eight points led a balanced Indian attack. Andrew Snitker finished with seven while Derek Snitker, Will Kramer, Bjerke, and Mellick all collected six points in the contest.

Andrew Snitker completed a great game with ten rebounds and a whopping six blocks.

Gesing added four boards and dished out three assists.

Derek Snitker had two assists and three steals.

Bjerke added three takeaways and Kramer had two assists.

The sophomore Indians completed the 2004-2005 season Tuesday, Feb. 22, with a 54-42 road win over Decorah.

Waukon had already taken a 25-20 lead at halftime. The Indians built on their advantage late in the game, outscoring their hosts 29-22 in the final two quarters.

Three Indians finished the night in double figures. Bjerke notched 16 points, Gesing poured in 12, and Derek Snitker added ten.

Andrew Snitker grabbed eight boards and denied two Viking shots.

Bjerke wrapped up the night with six rebounds, a pair of assists, and two steals.

Kramer led the Indians with three assists while Mellick also set up a pair of buckets.

Gesing and Derek Snitker helped the defense with two steals each.
