Ione Stangeland, 100, of Newark, Ill., formerly of Wedron, died Wednesday evening, February 16, 2005, at the LaSalle County Nursing Home. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 19 at the Fox River Lutheran Church with Pastor Kevin Garner officiating. Burial was in DeBolt Cemetery. Arrangements were through Gabel-Dunn Funeral Home, Ltd. in Sheridan.
Ione was born February 14, 1905, in Rutland Township, LaSalle County, Illinois. She was a teacher in one room schools in Rutland Township before she married Russell N. Stangeland June 1, 1927, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ottawa. Russell died March 28, 1978.
She was a member of Fox River Lutheran Church and had been active with the Trinity Lutheran Church Women’s Society and taught Sunday School at Freedom Lutheran Church and St. Petre Lutheran Church. She had been a volunteer for Pleasant View Luther Home and the LaSalle County Nursing Home.
She is survived by a daughter, Marian Orabelle (Jim) Bristol of Sheridan; a son, David (Gretchen) Stangeland of Waukon; 12 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret Parrish of Oak Harbor, Wash.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Stangeland; a son, Merle Stangeland; a sister, Myrna Brandow; and three brothers, Lorine McMichael, Floyd McMichael, and George McMichael.
Pallbearers were her grandsons, Brad Bristol, Marc Bristol, Scott Stangeland, Kyle Stangeland, Steve Stangeland, and Paul Stangeland.
Memorials may be directed to the Fox River Lutheran Church, LaSalle County Nursing Home Memorial Fund, or Pleasant View Luther Home.
