The Allamakee County Conservation Board has recently partnered with the Waukon Wellness Center and the Main Street Lansing Office to make snowshoes available for rent to the public. The Allamakee County Conservation Board purchased thirty pairs of snowshoes for promoting healthy outdoor winter activity and conducting programs in area schools. These initial snowshoes were used in area schools during the week and made available to the public for rent on the weekends.
Due to overwhelming success and response to the snowshoe program, the Conservation Board applied for and received a grant from the Allamakee County Community Foundation to purchase additional snowshoes. With this grant money, the Conservation Board was able to purchase an additional thirty pairs of snowshoes along with thirty pairs of collapsible hiking poles. With the additional pairs of snowshoes, snowshoe rental will now be available to the public during the weekdays, as well as the weekends.
The cost for renting snowshoes is $5.00 per pair per day, hiking poles may also be rented at a cost of $1.00 per set per day. The sets of snowshoes are sized from youth to adult, and are available on a first come, first serve basis. The snowshoes may be picked up from the Allamakee County Conservation Board Office located at 427 North First Street Harpers Ferry 563-586-2996, the Waukon Wellness Center 1220 3rd Ave. NW 563-568-0074, or the Main Street Lansing Office located at 288 Main St. 563-538-9229.
Snowshoeing is a great way to experience the winter landscape seeing animal tracks, listening to winter birds, and viewing the beautiful scenery of Allamakee County. For information or questions about snowshoeing, snowshoe rental, or for ideas for places to go snowshoeing contact the Allamakee County Conservation Board via email accb@acegroup.cc or by calling 563-586-2996.
