Area group of concerned citizens to host educational meeting on sand mining October 14 in New Albin

In light of a proposed sand mining operation to be located on land in Allamakee County owned by Dave Mitchell about five miles southwest of New Albin, an educational meeting to discuss the issues surrounding this new land use has been scheduled for Sunday, October 14. The meeting will be held at the New Albin Community Center, beginning at 1 p.m., and the public is invited to attend.
Two individuals who have extensive experience with frac sand mining in Wisconsin will give presentations, followed by a question and answer period and time for discussion.
Kelvin Rodolfo, retired geology professor from the University of Illinois at Chicago, will present a PowerPoint program covering all aspects of silica sand and sand mining operations. The second presenter will be Pat Popple, who has committed her life to helping local-level volunteer organizations understand and deal with frac sand issues that many believe to be critical to society. Popple will describe methods that other counties have used, and provide advice gained from numerous ongoing initiatives to conserve local landscapes and adjacent communities.
The October 14 meeting is being held prior to a public hearing scheduled by the Allamakee County Board of Adjustment for October 24 in regard to the proposed sand mining operation. A public notice regarding that October 24 public hearing can be found on Page 4B in this week's issue of The Standard.
