Linda Lucy, Staff Assistant to Sen. Tom Harkin, to present Memorial Day address in Waukon May 28

Linda Lucy, Staff Assistant to Senator Tom Harkin, will serve as featured speaker at the 2012 Memorial Day Observance Program being held at Oakland Cemetery in Waukon Monday, May 28. In addition to the traditional F-16 Fighter Jet Flyover that takes place in conjunction with the program, there will also be Cannon Salutes for POW/MIA Awareness and Civil War Sesquicentennial Recognition that will include the live firing of a black powder cannon and a 12-pound Mountain Howitzer, respectively, by Allen, Linda and Noah Lyon of the 3rd Light Artillery, Waukon.

MEDALS PRESENTATION
Another highlight of this year's Memorial Day Observance Program in Waukon will be the presentation of military service medals and awards to the families of deceased World War II Veterans Kenneth W. Smith and Vincent B. Slivinski, whose family members from this area and abroad are expected to be in attendance to receive those overdue awards from Lucy on behalf of Senator Harkin.
Smith achieved the rank of Corporal with the 359th U.S. Army Infantry. His World War II service spanned from December 10, 1943 through December 28, 1945.
Slivinski was listed as a Tech 4 in the U.S. Army serving with Company A of the 705th TD Battalion. His service tenured from September 26, 1942 through November 20, 1945.

FURTHER DETAILS
Monday’s program at Oakland Cemetery in Waukon will commence following the traditional parade that begins at 9:45 a.m. in front of the Allamakee County Courthouse and marches its way to the cemetery. All Veterans are encouraged to participate, a ride will be provided for those Veterans unable to walk the parade route to the cemetery. Anyone wishing to enter a unit in the parade should contact Heather Homewood at the Allamakee County Veterans Affairs Office at 563-568-6135.

FEATURED SPEAKER
Linda Lucy has worked for Senator Harkin in his Dubuque office since 1988 when, as a recent graduate of The University of Dubuque, she started volunteering in the new Harkin Dubuque office.  She then began her full-time Senate career in 1991 as a Staff Assistant to the Senator, overseeing his Dubuque office, managing outreach to residents in the area, attending events on the Senator’s behalf and investigating casework concerns on behalf of constituents.
Since she started her career, Lucy's area of expertise has centered around veterans' cases, assisting the Senator’s constituents in obtaining benefits and healthcare from the Veterans Administration and medals from the National Personnel Records Center and the Department of Defense.   She commented, “It has been a wonderful career of service to my fellow Iowans”.
Lucy lives in Dubuque with her husband, Nick, who is retired from the Century Link Telephone Company and is an active member of the Dubuque Post 6 of the American Legion.   They enjoy visiting with their five children and five grandchildren. During her down time, Lucy’s interests include gardening, reading and overseas travel.
