Three organizations recently received significant donations from the Margaret Sweeney Trust. The Shriner's Hospital for Children in Minneapolis, MN, St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Memphis, TN, and the Allamakee Community School District have each had an amount in excess of $190,000 bestowed upon them through the Trust.
Margaret Sweeney was born and raised in Makee Township in Allamakee County and lived on the family farm her entire life with her brother, James, who preceded her in death. She spent much of her younger years working with various area families as their newborn babies arrived. She developed a very strong connection with area children and followed their progress in growing up before she passed away January 16, 2009 at the age of 81.
She developed a great fondness for the Shriner's Hospital in Minneapolis, MN, the St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, TN, and area children in the Allamakee Community School District. She was very proud of the local El Kahir Shriners Chapter and how the Shriners worked to help support children in need. She also attended many concerts and productions within the Waukon schools, so it is fitting that she left her estate and trust with these three institutions that work so closely with children. Her trust was divided equally between the three aforementioned institutions. Waukon State Bank was privileged to work with Margaret Sweeney for many years and felt honored to be the Trustee for her Trust. The recipients of the funds all expressed great appreciation for her generosity and said the funds will be put to good use.
